UEFA EURO 2012 Host Broadcast Talent Programme

Switzerland, March 30, 2012: UEFA’s Host Broadcast Talent Programme for UEFA EURO 2012 in Poland and Ukraine – in which some 230 local students are being given the chance to work at the final tournament – is gathering pace with the training programme well under way.

The training phase of the project is preparing all the students for their jobs at the event between 8 June and 1 July. Positions in the Host Broadcast Talent Programme cover television and video production, host broadcasting logistics, and broadcaster servicing. The scheme is aimed at media, journalism and sports-related faculties within universities, affording students a unique opportunity to enhance their studies in the fields of media, journalism and sports management with real event experience and invaluable knowledge in an area linked to their academic work.

The final draw in Kyiv last December was incorporated into the training plan to enable seven students to work and train in their positions, and thus gain valuable practical experience ahead of the championship.

Commentary Support: technical training workshops

After four weeks of travelling around Poland and Ukraine in February and March, involving visits to the relevant universities, all of the technical training workshops for the commentary support students have been completed. The technical training workshops were attended by just over 100 students, and lasted two days.

The first day spanned the theoretical knowledge and technical language of the position, while the second day offered the students real practical training on the equipment they would be using at the tournament to support the commentators in each venue. The students were assessed across the two days, and with the standard being very high, 68 students were finally chosen for actual positions and 33 for the reserve pool.

Once again, the universities created excellent professional learning environments to train in, and were exceptional in assisting UEFA in delivering the training workshops. Further refresher training sessions will be held on the first day after arrival at the specific venues.

At each of the technical training workshops, a quiz was organised to test the knowledge of the students on UEFA and UEFA EURO 2012, with one winner receiving as a prize the official adidas Tango Ball for the championship.

CV and recruitment workshops

In addition to the technical training workshops, visits to the universities also entailed an additional workshop open to all students in the programme. The workshops provided advice that would be helpful to the students in the future when applying for jobs. It looked at the areas of how to apply for jobs, structuring CVs and covering letters, interviewing skills for face to face and Skype interviews, reflection and feedback, and social media awareness.

Elearning portals

Having gone live in March, the elearning platform is designed to boost the learning process prior to the tournament and supply non-stop access to knowledge and information, making it an essential part of the overall training. All students are required to complete the generic content – six modules containing information about UEFA and the championship – and then, depending on their position, further specific modules on event transport and broadcaster servicing.

Venue visits

In May, venue visits to every stadium will be organised, so permitting the students to familiarise themselves with their working environments before they start their work. This should smooth preparations for their first day as well as giving them venue-specific knowledge to help them in their jobs.

One-week UEFA experience

As a conclusion to the scheme, managers will select students that make outstanding contributions in their work at the finals, with one student from Poland and one from Ukraine winning a one-week UEFA field trip to UEFA’s headquarters in Switzerland. The prize includes flights and accommodation, a chance to shadow professionals working in the area of the students’ academic studies, as well as some unique UEFA experiences. Image © uefa.com
