Ireland Shock Hosts in the IRB Junior World Championship

South Africa, June 04, 2012: Ireland Shock, Ireland have ripped up the Junior World Championship formbook and caused a huge shock on the opening day of the 2012 tournament beating hosts South Africa by 23-19 in a thrilling match at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch in front of an 11,000 strong crowd.

The final match of the day at University of Western Cape Stadium saw another upset as Argentina overturned France 18-15 in another fiercely contested match.

The tournament’s opening encounters were more predictable, as last year’s semi finalists Australia, defending champions New Zealand and 2011 runners up England all recorded comfortable victories to top Pools C, B and A respectively.

Australia scored the most tries of the day, running 11 past Scotland in an emphatic display, including the first of the tournament within a minute, as they posted a 67-12 victory over Scotland in Cape Town.

New Zealand, aiming to secure a fifth successive title, dominated Samoa at the Danie Craven Stadium for their 63-0 win, after Wales scored six second-half tries to overturn a 12-3 half-time deficit and run out 44-18 winners against Fiji.
