Qatar 2022 LLC board meets in Doha ahead of Al Wakrah Stadium inauguration

Doha, Qatar, August 14, 2019: With the opening of Al Wakrah Stadium later this evening serving as an exciting backdrop to the discussions on Qatar’s readiness to host the world’s biggest single-sport event in 2022, the board members of the recently created 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar™ LLC met in Doha today for the second time.

H.E. Hassan Al Thawadi, who combines his role as Secretary General of the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) with Chairman of the joint venture, said of the meeting:

“The progress that Qatar and FIFA have achieved since our inaugural board meeting earlier this year is a testament to the strength of the relationship between our teams.

We are all looking forward to the imminent opening of Al Wakrah Stadium, which we are sure will become one of the iconic venues of Qatar 2022.

In the meantime, work on the tournament’s complex delivery requirements continues apace, in partnership with our local and international stakeholders.”

With the aim of laying solid foundations for the body responsible for planning and delivering operations and services for the tournament, the board ratified scope exercises and milestones mapped for projects under the responsibility of the joint venture.

Over the past three months, opportunities and synergies have also identified by the three key entities that will deliver the event: FIFA, the host country through the SC, and the LLC.

“Qatar is working hard and constantly making progress,” added FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura (Qatar 2022 LLC board).

“There is a strong commitment here to meeting the highest standards, and Qatar is establishing itself as a benchmark to the event industry both regionally and internationally.

Having a second stadium ready with more than three years to go until the event fills us with confidence that all necessary tests will be done to guarantee a unique experience for the fans and the teams.”

Besides Al Wakrah Stadium, Khalifa International Stadium went through renovation and re-opened to the public in May 2017.

After hosting the IAAF World Athletics Championships in September-October 2019, Khalifa International Stadium will go through some final adaptations in order to be ready to host games up to the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals in 2022.

Al Bayt Stadium – Al Khor City, another of the eight venues proposed by Qatar, is scheduled to be delivered later this year. —- FIFA
