EuroBasket 2015 Qualifiers Groups Drawn

Germany, Feb 03, 2014: The waiting for the participating teams of the EuroBasket 2015 2nd Qualification Round is over as the qualifying groups were drawn in Barcelona, Spain, on Monday.

FIBA Europe Acting President Cyriel Coomans and Secretary General Kamil Novak welcomed the more than 80 guests at the event in Majestic Hotel.

FIBA President Yvan Mainini, French Federation President Jean-Pierre Siutat, Lithuanian Federation President Arvydas Sabonis and Ukraine Federation President Oleksandr Volkov helped draw the groups.

The 26 teams were drawn into seven round-robin groups – five (5) groups of four (4) teams and two (2) groups of three (3) teams. The seven group winners, plus the six best second-placed teams, a total of 13 teams, will qualify to the Final Round in Ukraine. Top seed Italy were drawn into Group G together with EuroBasket 2007 champions Russia and Switzerland in the first group of only three teams. In the other group of only three, Bosnia and Herzegovina will face Great Britain and Iceland.

In order to determine the six best second-placed teams the results of the games against the fourth (4th) placed team, in each of the groups of four teams will be removed from the ranking process, in order to rank teams on a ‘like for like’ basis across all of the groups.

The game days for the 2nd Qualification Round are set for 10, 13, 17, 20, 24 and 27 August 2014. 11 teams have already punched their ticket to EuroBasket 2015.

France, Lithuania, Spain, Croatia, Slovenia, Ukraine, Serbia, Finland, Greece and Turkey courtesy of their participation in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup. Estonia has qualified through the 1st Qualification Round last summer. —- FibaEurope
