Athletics world focuses on Monaco

Monaco – Nov 12, 2013: This week the eyes of the Athletics world will be on the Principality of Monaco, home to the headquarters of the IAAF. As well as the staging of the annual International Athletics Foundation (IAF) World Athletics Gala, Monaco will be a hive of administrative work.

A two-day sitting of the IAAF Council, is one of 13 meetings, workshops and assemblies which concern the governing and organisation of the sport worldwide.

The IAAF family will gather to celebrate the 2013 World Athletics Gala at the Salle des Etoiles of the Sporting Club d’Eté on Saturday 16 November.

Hosted by IAF Honorary President HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco and IAF & IAAF President Lamine Diack, the World Athletics Gala will be highlighted by the announcement of the male and female 2013 World Athletes of the Year.

The sport of Athletics will have further opportunity to mark outstanding achievements via a number of other awards and honours including those for Rising Star and Lifetime Achievement; 12 legendary athletes – including multiple World and Olympic champions and former World record-holders – will also be inducted into the IAAF Hall of Fame.

The Gala’s 600+ guests, who will include many of the world’s top athletics stars, past and present, will be entertained this year by the Swann Band, a Paris-based group of 11 musicians, vocalists and dancers who have been called the best party band in Europe.

A two-day meeting of the IAAF Council, Thursday 14 to Friday 15 November, along with gatherings of various IAAF Commissions, IAF Council, and Diamond League General Assembly are among those that will be staged before, during, and immediately following the Gala weekend. —- IAAF
