London 2012 Olympic Truce

IOC News: On the occasion of the United Nations International Day of Peace, London 2012 has launched the “Get Set for the Olympic Truce” programme with the participation of the recent World Athletics Championships bronze medallist Andy Turner, who was joined by students at Swanlea School in Whitechapel, Tower Hamlets. The “Peace One Day” concert will close the celebrations in the evening (London 2012 Olympic Truce).

A chance to learn about the Olympic Truce

The London 2012 Olympic Truce programme offers young people the chance to learn about the Olympic Truce and to take part in sporting and cultural activities which help encourage peace and truce in their schools and communities. As part of the launch, students at Swanlea took part in a creative workshop to develop design ideas for a new London 2012 Olympic Truce pin badge and came up with ideas about how they can promote the themes of the Olympic Truce within their school and community. They were the first school in the UK to use new resources designed to support young people in learning about the Olympic Truce. The “Get Set for the Olympic Truce” resources will be made available to every school and college across the UK through the official London 2012 Education Programme, Get Set goes global.

IOC President Jacques Rogge said: “Sport has the power to reach many people across the globe and, in essence, is a language understood by everyone. Sport can inspire peace and fosters understanding and dialogue. Sport is a magnet for young people that can instil hope and be used to teach positive values and valuable life lessons. With the inspiring ‘Get Set Olympic Truce’ programme, young people will discover that sport transcends all differences; that sport combines friendship, solidarity, fair play and universality; and that practising sport is a human right. I would like to praise the initiative of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games which, through this programme, fulfils the vision of the Olympic Truce.”
Sport, a powerful tool for peace

The promotion of peace through sport has been central to the Olympic Movement since its inception. The founder of the International Olympic Committee, Pierre de Coubertin, believed deeply that the unifying power of sport could help lead us to a more peaceful world. The Olympic Movement promotes peace in many ways. The Olympic Games demonstrate on a global scale that people from very different cultures and backgrounds have much in common. The Youth Olympic Games use sport to promote cultural understanding.
