Galatasaray Awarded 2012 Final Eight

FIBA Europe Press Release October 20, 2011: FIBA Europe has announced that the Euro League Women 2012 Final Eight will be organised by the club Galatasaray Medical Park in Istanbul, 28th March to 1st April 2012 (Galatasaray Awarded 2012 Final Eight).

The venue for the tournament, which will feature Europe’s top-eight women’s teams, will be Abdi Ipekci, the home of Galatasaray. “Istanbul is a major tourist destination and a hot spot for sports events. I am positive that this will be a tournament that everybody will enjoy,” said FIBA Europe President Olafur Rafnsson.

Galatasaray won the right to organise the event ahead of UMMC Ekaterinburg which wanted the event for the second year running, after staging the 2011 Final Four. “We had two high quality bids but in the end we decided to go with Galatasaray as this will set a milestone, the first time a Euro League Women final tournament will be staged in Turkey,” commented FIBA Europe Secretary General Nar Zanolin.

The Galatasaray bid enjoys the support of the experienced Turkish Basketball Federation who is trying to build on the momentum gained by Turkey’s silver medal success in this year’s Euro Basket Women in Poland.

The country will also organise the Women’s World Championship in 2014.
