Monaco – April 27, 2012: Two weeks from today at the Qatar Sports Club Stadium in Doha, Qatar on Friday 11 May, the opening meeting of the 2012 Samsung Diamond League takes place heralding the start of the third season of the sport’s top invitational circuit of meetings. In total the 14 meeting global series offers a total of 8 Million USD in prize money.
Doha holds a very special place in the history of the Samsung Diamond League as it was the first ever meeting to be staged within the series, and each year acts as a figurative as well as a literal starting line for the world’s best athletes as they commence their season long campaigns to win Diamond Race Trophies across 32 event disciplines.
Winners of each Diamond Race receive a 40,000 USD cash prize and a spectacular Diamond Trophy, a reward for their season long consistency.
After only two seasons it is clear that the challenge is already one of the hardest in world sport let alone Athletics, as only 11 athletes have managed to win and retain the Diamond Race title in their respective event(s).
