Annual “Sochi 2014 Teacher” Contest Launched

The Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee, in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, has announced the launch of the annual All-Russian “Sochi 2014 Teacher” Contest. Its main objective is to give the country’s teachers the opportunity to contribute to the development of Olympic education through the development and implementation of programs, seminars and educational modules on Olympic and Paralympic themes.

In 2012, the Contest will be held in 4 categories:

• “The most successful Olympic knowledge ambassador” (work demonstrating the extent of educational resource implementation, developed by the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee and presented on the “Education” page);

• “The most informative media project on the Olympic theme” (development and implementation of various Internet projects, radio and television programs, themed projects in publications);

• “The most informative project involving mass sports ” (staging of mass sports events);

• Special nomination for “Best participating school in the “One school, one country” program.

The “Sochi 2014 Olympic Teacher” Contest is being held for the third time. In 2012, it became even more large-scale: now, not only teachers are invited to take part in the event, but also organizations, sports clubs and public societies, supporting the ideas and principles of the Olympic and Paralympic Movement. Moreover, if the 2010 and 2011 contests were focused on the development of informative and educational materials, then the 2012 contest puts the emphasis on their mass implementation, a process in which specialists in the field of education and volunteers, organizers of cultural mass events and representatives of the media will all take part.

Applications will continue to be accepted from April 1 to September 20, 2012. To participate in the competition, it is necessary to apply to the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee’s Education department by e-mail teacher@sochi2014.com. In their evaluation of the work, the jury will take into account the scale of the event, its adherence to the theme announced and the creative element of the project.

Following the results of their work, the winners and prizewinners of the contest will be selected by the commission. Their awards will take place in November 2012 in Moscow and Sochi.

The “Sochi 2014 Olympic Teacher” contest was launched on August 25, 2010. More than 2,500 teachers from 76 Russian regions took part in it, from the Magadan region to the Krasnodar region, as well as teachers from Canada, Germany and Ukraine. The contest laureates were 38 teachers from 10 Russian cities.

The second tour of the “Sochi 2014 Teacher” Contest came to a close on December 22, 2011. More than 3,000 teachers from 78 Russian regions and 4 countries, Germany, Canada, Bulgaria and Ukraine took part in it. The 16 winners in four contest nominations and 53 prizewinners were selected by the decision of an expert commission from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation and the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee.

The Sochi 2014 Olympic Education system was approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Its main objective is to spread Olympic and Paralympic ideals as part of the creation of a friendly environment for the staging of the XXII Olympic Winter Games and XI Paralympic Winter Games in 2014. The Sochi 2014 Olympic Education system is also designed for integration in the Russian education system to create a full understanding of the Olympic Movement and the sports industry in general.
