Saudi Women’s Bocce Team mark debut at Special Olympics World Games with two wins

The Olympics Sports team Abdul Rahim and Muhammad Saeed, Abu Dhabi, March 15, 2019: It was a moment to remember for Saudi Arabia as the women’s Bocce team won its first-ever match at Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019 (Saudi Women Bocce Team).

Saudi Women Bocce Team have never participated in a World Games until now, with KSA sending 21 women to the UAE for the Games. On the first day of the competition, the Bocce side could not have asked for a better start after making a big impact in the team competition at ADNEC.

Shahad Sunbul (15), Wejdan Alsulami (19), Jana Albeshri (17) and Sara Ahmed Felemban (18) all played integral roles as the team won two games in one day, beating Costa Rica 5-3 and Jordan 15-3.

The victories saw the whole team celebrate together, with each athlete buzzing with joy as they excitedly embraced each other.

“It is an unbelievable feeling to have won our matches today,” said Sara.

“We are all over the moon because this is a big moment for us and the entire Saudi Arabia country.

We have worked really hard for the World Games and we have done so well today.”
Wejdan added: “The whole atmosphere has been really exciting, and we have enjoyed ourselves.

Saudi Women Bocce Team Our country is proud of our participation and will be so happy to hear we have won our matches. We cannot wait to play our next games over the next few days.”

Her team-mate Jana said it was fantastic to be part of this historic moment.

The World Games is something that we will remember for a long time and we hope to get even more wins and make our country even more proud.”

Shahad echoed Jana’s feelings, adding there is no reason why the Saudi team cannot win gold medals.

“This result will give us a lot of confidence going forward and now we want to go and win gold medals, which would be an amazing feeling for all of us.”

In the same competition, Bahrain completed a double victory over USA while hosts UAE beat Bonaire 14-2 before the two teams played out a thrilling 10-10 draw.

Meanwhile in other sporting action, the UAE beat Team USA 52-30 in its opening mixed basketball match while the UAE unified football team claimed victory over South Africa on Friday.

Playing its second match of the World Games at Zayed Sports City, the 11-a-side UAE team recorded a 4-0 win.

In a dominant performance, Ayman Al Maqbali and Abdelaziz Al Hamour were on the scoresheet while Khalid Al Maamari scored a brace.

The UAE men’s handball side opened its campaign on a winning note with a 19-15 victory over Russia. —- SOWG2019
