Kuala Lumpur, Oct 27, 2013: The Executive Board and Council of the Olympic Council of Malaysia congratulates Y.Bhg. Dato’ Low Beng Choo, Vice President of OCM, on retaining her position as the Secretary General of the International Softball Federation (ISF), at the ISF’s Congress held in Cartagena, Colombia, on 26th October 2013.
Official launch of the Queen’s Baton Relay
The Queen’s Baton arrived in the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on 26th October 2013 at 8.00 am., and was received by Tan Sri Abdul Halil Abd Mutalif, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee of Queen’s Baton Relay, H.E. Mr. Ray Kyles, Acting British High Commissioner, and a representative of UNICEF and a representative of British Council. The Baton was accompanied by Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. M. Jegathesan, Honorary Medical Adviser of the Commonwealth Games Federation, and Mr. Louis Rosa, General Manager of the Queen’s Baton Relay of Glasgow 2014.
From KLIA, the Queen’s Baton was taken to the Sports Museum and Hall of Fame of the Olympic Council of Malaysia, Wisma OCM, where a Media Conference with YAM Tunku Tan Sri Imran ibni Almarhum Tuanku Ja’afar, President of CGF and OCM. After the media conference, Encik G. Saravanan, Gold medalist of the 50km Race Walk event of the 1998 Commonwealth presented his gold medal and his 1998 competition attire to the OCM Sports Museum. On completion of the presentation, the Queen’s Baton was taken to the Tan Sri Hamzah Arena, where the Table Tennis competitions of the 3rd Asian Youth Para Games were being held. The Queen’s Baton was passed to two representatives of each of the 15 national Table Tennis teams participating in the 3rd Asian Youth Para Games. The Queen’s Baton was then taken to Novotel Hotel, Jalan Kia Peng, Kuala Lumpur, where the Team had booked their accommodation.
At 3.00 pm., the Queen’s Baton was taken to the Putra Indoor Stadium, Bukit Jalil, for the Opening Ceremony of the 3rd Asian Youth Para Games. The last item of the Opening Ceremony, was the handing of the Queen’s Baton to the Hon. Minister of Youth and Sports Malaysia, the Hon. Mr. Khairy Jamaluddin. The Baton was brought into the Stadium by a group of able and disable children, who handed over the Baton to the Hon. Minister, witnessed by YAM Tunku Tan Sri Imran ibni Almarhum Tuanku Ja’afar, President of the CGF and CGA Malaysia, the President of the Asian and Malaysian Paralympic Council and the Chairman of the Organising Committee of the 3rd Asian Youth Para Games. The Hon. Minister then handed the Queen’s Baton to a Malaysian Para athlete of the 3rd Asian Youth Para Games.
The Queen’s Baton Relay was held on 27th October 2013 at the Taman Botani Tasik Perdana, Kuala Lumpur from 7.30 a.m. The participants were divided into 7 groups, with each group running the 2.8 km circuit and on completion of each leg of the Relay, the group passed the Baton to the next group, until all six groups had completed their leg. Around 600 runners participating, with each group having around 100 runners. The groups were the CGA of Malaysia, the British High Commission, the British Council, Sponsors, Wheel-chair and children, National Sports Institute Malaysia of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and Malaysian Commonwealth Games medalists and athletes.
Besides the above groups organisations who participated in the Queen’s Baton Relay were the Royal Commonwealth Society Malaysia, the Royal Selangor Club, the Hash House Harriers, the Bukit Jalil Sports School, the National Junior Women Basketball team and the public. The Queen’s Baton Relay was sponsored by AmBank Berhad, Bata (Power), Milo, 100Plus, and Sports Toto. The sponsors also participated in the Relay with their staff.
Immediately after the completion of the Queen’s Baton Relay, the ‘Disable to Enable’ campaign was launched by YAM Tunku Tan Sri Imran ibni Almarhum Tuanku Ja’afar, Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. M. Jegathesan, President and Honorary Medical Adviser of the CGF, respectively, a representative of the British High Commission and the representative of UNICEF, on the field next to the Boat House at Taman Botani Tasik Perdana, from 10.00am to 10.30am.
A farewell reception hosted by the British High Commission, at the Residence of the British High Commissioner from 4.30 pm to 6.30 pm. The Queen’s Baton Relay team will depart to Brunei Darussalam on Monday 28th October 2013.
Workshop on Sukan Malaysia – The Way Forward
The Olympic Council of Malaysia will be organising a Workshop on Sukan Malaysia under the Theme “The Way Forward”. The Workshop will be held on Tuesday, 29th October 2013 from 9.30 am till 12.30 noon at the Dewan Datuk Mokktar Dahari and Dewan Dato’ Ho Koh Chye, Olympic Sports Hotel, Wisma OCM, Kuala Lumpur. The objective of the Workshop is to evaluate the benefits from Sukan Malaysia since its inception in 1986 and to propose ways of further enhancing the benefits.
Papers will be presented by the following partner organizations of Sukan Malaysia:
• Olympic Council of Malaysia
• Majlis Sukan Negara/Majlis Sukan Negeri-Negeri
• Wakil Persatuan Sukan Kebangsaan/Persatuan Sukan Negeri-Negeri
• Majlis Sukan Sekolah-Sekolah Malaysia
Representatives of State Sports Associations, National Sports Associations, National Sports Council, State Sports Councils, , Majlis Sukan Sekolah-Sekolah Malaysia (MSSM), Majlis Sukan Universiti-Universiti Malaysia (MASUM), Olympic Council of Malaysia, etc. are cordially invited to attend and participate in the discussions following the presentation of papers. There is no registration fee. OCM Hall of Fame
The OCM Awards Committee, under Y.Bhg. Tan Sri Abdul Halil Abdul Mutalif, the Chairman, invites National Sports Associations, State Sports Associations and other sports organizations to nominate outstanding retired national athletes and officials for consider to be inducted into the OM Hall of Fame.
The OCM Hall of Fame was established in 1993 and to date, over 120 athletes and officials have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. Their photographs and brief write-ups of their sports achievement are exhibited in the OM Sports Museum and Hall of Fames in Wisma OCM.
4th Session Advanced Sport Management Course (ASMC) 2013 (24th to 27th October 2013)
The last and fourth (4th) Session of the 6th Edition of the ASMC ended very successfully on the 27th October 2013 in Wisma OCM after 4 days of discussion, presentations of case studies and sharing of the impact of the Course by the participants. The remaining ten (10) participants out of 16 who first registered in March 2013, promised to complete their assignments to graduate.
The lunch-talk on Saturday (26 October) by Mr. Rainer Biemans from Dirigo Events Sdn Bhd. was well received and beneficial to the participants and those from the alumni. The topics covered were as follows: Partners / Service Contractors and their roles in delivering the event; Strategies to make the event the biggest and best in the country; Challenges faced, example the haze threat and the postponement etc.; The 5-years growth of the event since privatised and how do one see Standard Chartered KLMarathon in 3 years time
The Course ended in good cheer and celebration with everyone promising to meet again at the graduation in January 2014. The 2013 ASMC were facilitated by six (6) facilitators namely: Mr. Wan Yew Leong, Ms. Moira Tan, Dr. Selina Khoo, Mr. Peter Chee, Tn. Sheikh Kamaruddin, Mr. Stanley Charles and Mr. Andrew Gopal.
2nd Sport Administrators Course (SAC) 2013
The 2nd Sport Administrators Course for 2013 will be organised from the 29 November to 1 December 2013 (Friday-Sunday) in Wisma OCM. The brochure, application form and programme had been completed and distributed for marketing purposes. The NSAs will receive the advertisement through emails. The details of the Course have been submitted to be put in the OCM website. The two National Course Directors are Dr. Selina Khoo and Mr. Peter Chee assisted by facilitators namely: Mr. V.Clarence Selvam, Mr. Md Saadon B. A. Shukor, Mr. Stanley Charles and Mr. Wan Yew Leong.
