IPC Press Release Nov 25, 2011: Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff was presented with the Paralympic Honour on Thursday (24 November) by International Paralympic Committee (IPC) President Sir Philip Craven at an event in Brasilia to welcome home the Brazil team from the 2011 Parapan American Games.
Sir Philip, who is in Brazil for Saturday’s Rio 2016 Paralympic Games emblem launch, gave a short speech before presenting the honour, which is bestowed on high ranking dignitaries, officials and others outside the Paralympic Movement, to President Rousseff.
Sir Philip said: “It was an excellent event to welcome home the Brazilian team who performed so well at last week’s Parapan American Games. “After receiving the honour from me on behalf of the IPC, President Rousseff took time to meet and congratulate a number of the athletes who had won so many medals for Brazil in Guadalajara.
“For such an event to take place in the lead-up to Saturday’s emblem launch for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games is great news for the Paralympic Movement and helps to raise our profile even further.”
At the 2011 Parapan American Games, which concluded on Sunday in Guadalajara, Mexico, Brazil topped the medals table for the second successive Games after winning 197 medals, including 81 golds. Daniel Dias won a staggering 11 golds in the swimming pool. On Saturday evening at 8:00pm (BRST), the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games emblem will be unveiled at Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, one of the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games venues.
The look of the emblem is a closely guarded secret and the unveiling will be broadcast live on Brazilian TV via TV Global to an estimated audience of 50 million people.
