Hosts Qatar set up golden finale bid as ANOC World Beach Games enters final day

Doha, Qatar, October 15, 2019: Hosts Qatar have set up a potentially golden final day after reaching the Beach Volleyball final at the Association of National Olympic Committees ANOC World Beach Games Qatar 2019.

Following five days of thrilling action involving 13 sports, the first ever edition of the Games sets for a dramatic finale with the hosts shining through for a shot at gold.

It comes after another superb performance to beat Poland 2-0 at a packed Al Gharafa Club.

They will meet the highly fancied USA who beat Indonesia to set up the showpiece final with the hosts. Brazil and USA will square off in the women’s Beach Volleyball final after beating Australia and Canada respectively.

It very nearly a double shot at gold for the hosts, but Qatar came up agonizingly short in their semi-final of the Beach Handball, losing 2-1 to Brazil who will now meet Spain in the final.

ANOC World Beach Games, Qatar will face Sweden for the bronze. Hungary and Denmark will contest the women’s gold medal after their semi-final victories over Vietnam and Brazil respectively.

It was a case of déjà vu in the Aquathlon with Monday’s individual gold medal winners Francisca Tous and Kevin Viñuela teaming up to record a come-from-behind victory over Azerbaijan’s Kseniia Levkovska and Rostislav Pevtsovin the Mixed Team Relay at Katara Beach.

Hungary’s Marta Kropko and Mark Devay picked up the bronze.

USA won the women’s Kitefoil Racing gold when four-time defending world champion, Daniela Moroz, beat Julia Damasiewicz, of Poland, to the title.

Elena Kalinina secured bronze for Russia.

Italy claimed the first Beach Tennis gold of the Games when Flaminia Daina and Nicole Nobile beat Brazil’s Joana Cortez and Rafaella Miiller, 2-1, in the final of the Women’s Doubles.

In the Men’s Doubles, Antonio Ramos and Gerard Rodriguez, of Spain, saw off the threat of Andre Baran and Vinicius Font, of Brazil, in straight sets to secure Spain’s sixth gold of the Games to remain top of the medals table.

There were four Beach Wrestling golds up for grabs and they went the way of Italy’s Francesca Indelicato (w 60kg), Nigeria’s Blessing Joy Onyebuchi (w +70kg), Georgia’s Davit Khutsishvili (m 80kg) and Iran’s Pouya Rahmani (m +90kg).

The USA’s Heimana Reynolds won gold in the men’s Skateboarding following a final of thrills and spills which saw Puerto Rico’s Steven Pineiro take silver and Italy’s Alessandro Mazzara finish with bronze.

Team GB stunned Brazil 6-5 to reach Wednesday’s final of the women’s Beach Soccer where they will meet Spain, who beat Russia, 3-2.

The men’s gold will be contested between Russia and Brazil after both won their semi-finals tonight.

Qatar narrowly missed out on a spot in the last eight of the 3×3 Basketball which will feature Brazil v Slovenia, Ivory Coast v Russia, Ukraine v Argentina and China v Mongolia.

The women’s last eight will feature the USA v Brazil, China v Mali, France v Uganda and Netherlands v Russia. —- AWBG
