12th OCM Conference 2011, Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) Weekly Highlights

Kuala Lumpur-Malaysia Jan 19, 2012: The 12th OCM Conference 2011 will be held on Saturday, 10th March 2012, at 9.30 a.m., at Level 2C, OCM Indoor Sports Complex, Wisma OCM, Kuala Lumpur. The main speaker will be Prof. Leigh Robinson, the Lead Consultant of the Research Study on ‘Developing the Sport Industry’ of Malaysia.

The Theme of the Conference will be ‘Developing the Capacity of National Sports Associations’, based on the Report submitted by the Consultants, on one theme out of the five themes studied under the research by the team of Prof. Leigh Robinson. The Research Study was on the following 5 themes:

• Developing the Capacity of National Sports Associations.

• A benchmarking of the sports industry in Malaysia.

• An evaluation of sport retailing.

• An investigation into financial management models.

• Sponsorship.

All NSAs affiliated to OCM are requested to send two representatives to attend the 12th OCM Conference on 10th March 2012, and also to study the Report on ‘Developing the Capacity of National Sports Associations’, which had been distributed to them towards the end of 2011.

15th NOA Session for Young Participants, 27th February to 3rd March 2012:

The 15th National Olympic Academy for Young Participants will be organised from 27th February to 3rd March 2012. The venue will be at Wisma OCM, Kuala Lumpur.

As in past years, the best Malaysian male and the best Malaysian female participant, of the 15th Session will be selected to participate in the 52nd International Olympic Academy Session for Young Participants, to be held in Olympia, Greece, sometime from 16th to 30th June 2012.

Preference will be given to participants who are former or present national athletes nominated by their National Sports Associations. The participants are from 20 years to 35 years.

National Sports Associations are invited to submit their present and retired national athletes to attend the 15th National Olympic Academy Session for Young Participants. To date, many young representatives from the National Sports Associations have attended past National Olympic Academy Sessions and have found the sessions very beneficial.

In addition the opportunity to be selected to attend the 52nd International Olympic Academy Session for Young Participants, to be held in Olympia, is a great attraction for the participants to attend the NOA Session.

OCM Sports Goodwill Ambassadors Annual Gathering 2012:

The 2012 OCM Sports Goodwill Ambassadors Annual Gathering will be held on Saturday, 28th January 2012, immediately after the 163rd OCM Council meeting, at 11.30 a.m. at Wisma OCM, Kuala Lumpur.

The speakers are Dr. Selina Khoo, Sports Management Lecturer at the University of Malaya, who will speak on volunteerism in sport and Encik Charles Aitken David, Secretary General of the Malaysian Olympians Association and Olympic Hockey Player at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games, who will speak on the Malaysian Olympians Association and the World Olympians Association.

The talks will be very interesting and informative and participants will have the opportunity to learn more on these two topics. All are welcomed. Lunch will be served after the talks.

Olympic Values Education Programme (OVEP), Lusaka Zambia:

The OVEP Leadership Forum was held in Lusaka, Zambia on 5th & 6th January 2012. It was attended by sixteen participants from three regions namely Africa, Asia and Oceania, involved in the Education Programme from 2005 to 2010. The participants gathered with the aim to generate ideas and to find consensus to move forward and better the second phase of OVEP project.

The Forum, consisted of brain storming sessions, was hosted in the newly constructed Olympic Youth Development Centre of Lusaka, a multi-purpose complex, including outdoor facilities for athletics, football, basketball, tennis, handball, volleyball and hockey, an indoor sports venue, a boxing hall, a gymnasium, a number of classrooms and locker rooms, which was the pride of the NOC of Zambia headed by its President, Mrs. Miriam C. Moyo.

At the Opening, the chief facilitator and organiser, Mr. T.A. Ganda Sithole, Director of the IOC International Cooperation and Development Department, confirmed that OVEP has been an effective tool for Olympic Movement to educate youths using sports as the vehicle.

He encouraged participants to have fruitful discussions at the forum and come out with innovative and effective approach to the programme for the future. In his delivery paper, he reminded participants of their mission, the Olympic values, the Global objectives and the main international partners in the Programme. He also quoted some examples of projects the department had run in the promotions of Olympic values to the youths.

The participants had also the pleasure of meeting and listening to the Sports Minister of Zambia. He informed the participants that there was a need for young people to learn useful behaviours to promote peace and understanding, to make choices and become the best in whatever they do so as to be a balanced human-being.

He encouraged all NOCs to spread the OVEP programme and he proudly expressed that in Zambia, there were 350 OVEP leaders trained and 400 teachers and parents initiated whereby increasing a better relationship among teachers, parents and their children. He thanked the IOC for bringing the Programme to Zambia.

In conclusion, the participation of OCM in this forum had given insight into the programme for future implementation in schools in Malaysia.
