Statement On EuroBasket 2015

Munich, May 16, 2014: The Board of FIBA Europe which convened in Munich, Germany on Thursday, approved a request by the Ukrainian Basketball Federation to postpone any decision on EuroBasket 2015 until the beginning of June.

Ukrainian Federation President Sasha Volkov explained to the Board that these additional weeks will give its Federation the time window needed to “work on the best possible solution not only for Ukraine but also for the EuroBasket tournament and image itself.”

As Thursday’s meeting was the last of the current Board any decision on the fate of the upcoming EuroBasket will now be taken by the new Board (term of office 2014-2018) which will be elected by the FIBA Europe General Assembly on Saturday, 17 May.

In March, the Board authorised the FIBA Europe Secretariat to prepare a contingency plan in the eventuality of a need for the complete or partial relocation of the EuroBasket 2015.

FIBA Europe Secretary General Kamil Novak revealed on Thursday that the Secretariat has received letters of interest from 16 European Federations, willing to participate in the complete or partial organization of the tournament. —- Fibaeurope
