EuroBasket 2015 Logo Unveiled In Ljubljana

Germany, Sept 22, 2013: The logo and visual identity of EuroBasket 2015 were unveiled on Sunday at a special ceremony and press-conference at Stozice Arena in Ljubljana a few hours before the EuroBasket 2013 medal games.

FIBA Europe Acting President Cyriel Coomans and FIBA Europe Secretary General Kamil Novak, together with Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine Oleksandr Vilkul, President of the Basketball Federation of Ukraine (FBU) Oleksandr Volkov and Tournament Director Markian Lubkivskyi presented the logo to media representatives for the first time.

The logo of EuroBasket 2015 was inspired by traditional Ukrainian dances – Arkan and Hopak – that are known for their jumps that serve as a parallel to jumping to score a basket. The shapes and the flow of the dancer’s costume are the reflection of the colours of different national flags and mixed cultures.

The power of a culture embracing the culture of the game. A leap towards the future of basketball in Ukraine. A Jump Forward together.

• The embrace and welcoming approach to Europe’s best players and fans.

• The mixed emotions of the game.

• The joy of celebration, the explosion of victory reflected in a Jump.

“We have had a wonderful event here in Slovenia,” said FIBA Europe Acting President Cyriel Coomans, adding, “I am now confident that Ukraine will have similar successes in preparing EuroBasket 2015 and I wish them the best of luck in their endeavours.”

“We have already been working for many months to prepare EuroBasket 2015,” said FIBA Europe Secretary General Kamil Novak at the logo launch.

“We want EuroBasket to become better and better,” continued Mr Novak.

“The Ukrainian LOC have already done a great job organising the U16 European Championship Men earlier this year and I am sure that EuroBasket 2015 will be just as good.”

Speaking at the press-conference, Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine Oleksandr Vilkul promised to do all in his power to organise the best EuroBasket in history and invited basketball fans to visit Ukraine and enjoy Ukrainian hospitality:

“This year the Ukrainian basketball team showed their best result in history. Our players became part of the top eight teams on the European continent. Their Cossack spirit, willingness to win, character and teamwork – were the foundations of this success. We have added to these qualities our Ukrainian hospitality to create the logo of EuroBasket 2015 which will take place in Ukraine.

“We will do our best for this logo to become a symbol of the most successful of all the European basketball championships. We will be very happy to welcome basketball fans to Ukraine, and will surprise and please them with high levels of service, comforts and festive atmosphere.”

Olympic champion and FBU President Oleksandr Volkov said the tournament will be a powerful boost for the development of Ukrainian basketball.

“In August this year, Ukraine hosted the U16 European Championship Men, demonstrating the highest level of organisation. Now the national team of Ukraine has become a major sensation at EuroBasket 2013 and jumped into elite ranks of European basketball.

“Ukraine made everybody in Europe to talk about its success. In two years, our national team will be even stronger for the EuroBasket hosted in our Ukrainian cities. I am sure that this will raise even more the interest in basketball in Ukraine, which is now greatly improved with the success of our team. I am convinced that EuroBasket 2015 will be the best in history.”

EuroBasket 2015 Tournament Director Markian Lubkivskyi spoke about the history of the creation of the visual image of the tournament:

“Following a competition between several international agencies, including four Ukrainian, the EuroBasket 2015 logo has been developed by Brandia Central, a brand consulting company based in Lisbon. Brandia also developed the logo for UEFA EURO 2012 and the 2013 U16 European Championship Men in Ukraine. The agency conducted a serious study of ancient Ukrainian symbols, traditions, culture and art and gave it a new interpretation based on the latest trends in brand design.”

“Portuguese designers felt the depth of Ukrainian traditions and were able to present it in a modern interpretation, closely combining basketball with traditional Ukrainian dances – hopak and arkan.”

According to the logo co-designer, Portugal’s Miguel Viana, the rich history and culture of Ukraine became a never-ending source of inspiration for his agency:

“After the development of the brand for UEFA EURO 2012, we recently followed it by creating the brand for UEFA EURO 2016 in France, it is with great joy that we have the opportunity to return to Ukraine to develop a brand for a new major world sports event: EuroBasket 2015.”
