New York’s Times Square takes the baton in ‘100-100-100

Monaco – June 05, 2012: One of the world’s most famous landmarks New York City’s Times Square will be the venue on Wednesday 6 June for a ‘100 Kids – 100 metres – 100 years’ relay to mark the Centenary year of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).

In staging this relay, Times Square receives the baton from the City of Beijing’s Olympic Park which on Sunday 13 May was the venue for the first of these special youth celebrations that are based on a concept devised with the IAAF’s partner adidas.

IAAF President Lamine Diack, and IAAF Athlete Ambassador Tirunesh Dibaba, the reigning Olympic 5000m and 10,000m champion, will be in attendance at the event, which is being staged by the organisers of the adidas Grand Prix, New York City’s Samsung Diamond League meeting, and the IAAF, and is strongly supported by the IAAF Centenary Main Partner VTB and Supporting Partners adidas and Mondo.

The runners are composed of 100 Youth Athletes from both the New York Road Runners youth programs and the adidas Fastest Kids project. The runners will be divided into Relay teams so that each of the 100 team members will cover 100 metres to symbolise that 100 years of Athletics Excellence is being carried forward by the next generation of athletes.

To mark this special event, which will also celebrate National Running Day in New York City, IAAF President Diack will announce the latest USA athletes to be honoured with Membership of the IAAF Hall of Fame, with one of those all-time track and field legends in Times Square as the surprise guest of honour.
