100 children – 100 metres – 100 years: Beijing celebrates IAAF Centenary

Monaco, May 11, 2012: The city of Beijing, China, which will host the 15th edition of the IAAF World Championships in 2015, will stage a special youth celebration on Sunday (13 May) to mark the year of the IAAF Centenary.

100 youngsters, split into 50 mixed teams (12-year-old boys and girls) of two runners will take part in a 100 metres Relay (2x 50m) race on a 50 metres track specially laid for the occasion in the Central Piazza of Beijing Olympic Park in the shadow of The Birds’ Nest.

Jointly organised by the IAAF, Chinese Athletic Association, Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sports and the Beijing Sports Competitions Administration Center, the relay which will be televised on CCTV is being held to celebrate 100 years of Athletics Excellence.

“100 children, 100 metres, 100 years, is an appropriately symbolic way to celebrate the IAAF Centenary,” said IAAF President Lamine Diack. “The IAAF was born in 1912 and the strength of our sport today, as it was 100 years ago, is its appeal to the youth of the world.”

“Fresh, lively activities for the young as we’ll see this weekend in Beijing are the key to keeping Athletics connected with the ‘next generation’. They are completely in line with our School and Youth development programme such as projects like the IAAF World Athletics Day and IAAF/Nestlé Kids’ Athletics, which is one of the biggest grassroots development programmes in the world of sports.”

“100 children each running 50 metres in a relay over 100 metres is a wonderful way to celebrate our 100th year but most importantly the children are sure to have great fun doing it,” concluded the president.

Ensuring a high level of excitement among the 100 participants, Chinese Olympic champions Wang Junxia (5000m ,1996), who will be inducted into the IAAF Hall of Fame later this year, and Wang Liping (20km Race Walk, 2000) will be on hand to motivate the children who come from schools situated close to the Birds’ Nest.

IAAF Council Member Jun-Ki Park and IAAF Honorary life Vice President Dapeng Lou and representatives of the Chinese Olympic Committee, Chinese Athletic Association and the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sports will also be in attendance. Ahead of the start, video messages from President Diack and China’s favourite sports’ star Liu Xiang, the 2004 Olympic and 2007 World 110m Hurdles champion and former World record holder, will be shown, and directly following the relay a Kids’ Athletics event for all the participants will be held.

11 mai 2012 – Monaco – Pour marquer l’année du Centenaire de l’IAAF, la ville de Pékin, qui accueillera la 15ème édition des Championnats du monde 2015, organise une manifestation spéciale destinée à la jeunesse, ce dimanche 13 mai.

100 jeunes, répartis en 50 équipes mixtes de deux coureurs (garçons et filles de 12 ans) prendront part à une course de relais de 100 mètres (2 x 50 m) sur une piste de 50 mètres spécialement aménagée pour l’occasion sur la Place Centrale du Parc Olympique de Pékin à proximité du Nid d’Oiseau.

Ce relais a été organisé conjointement par l’IAAF, la Fédération chinoise d’athlétisme, le Bureau municipal des sports et le Centre administratif et sportif de compétitions de la capitale pékinoise pour fêter 100 ans d’excellence de l’athlétisme. L’évènement sera retransmis sur la chaine CCTV.

« 100 enfants, 100 mètres, 100 ans, est une manière symbolique tout à fait appropriée de célébrer le Centenaire de l’IAAF, » a déclaré son Président, Lamine Diack. « L’IAAF est née en 1912 et la force de notre sport, de nos jours comme il y a un siècle, réside dans son pourvoir d’attraction des jeunes du monde entier ».

« Des activités ludiques et sympas comme celles auxquelles nous allons assister ce week-end à Pékin, sont la clé pour rester en phase avec la nouvelle génération. Elles s’inscrivent parfaitement dans le cadre de notre Programme de développement Ecole et Jeunes ainsi que dans des projets tels que la Journée Mondiale de l’Athlétisme ou le Kids’ Athletics en partenariat avec Nestlé qui est l’un des programmes populaires de développement les plus importants du monde sportif.»

«100 enfants qui courront 50 mètres chacun dans un relais de 100 mètres est une merveilleuse façon de célébrer notre centième anniversaire, mais plus important encore, c’est que les enfants s’amusent et passent un bon moment » a conclu le Président.

Les champions olympiques chinois, Wang Junxia (5 000 m, 1996), qui sera prochainement accueillie au sein du Hall of Fame, ainsi que Wang Liping (20 km marche, 2000) seront sur place pour encourager les enfants venus des écoles proches du Nid d’Oiseau.

Ki-Jun Park, membre du Conseil de l’IAAF et Dapeng Lou, Vice-président honoraire à vie, ainsi que les représentants du Comité olympique chinois, de la Fédération chinoise d’athlétisme et du Bureau municipal des sports de Pékin seront également présents.

En préambule aux festivités, un message vidéo du Président Diack et un autre de la star de l’athlétisme préférée des Chinois, Liu Xiang, champion olympique 2004, champion du monde 2007 et ancien détenteur du record du monde du 110m haies, seront projetés. Dès la fin du relais, une démonstration du « Kids’ Athletics » aura lieu avec tous les participants.
