Deplores deadly attack at Boston Marathon

Geneva, April 16, 2013: The deadly bomb attack at the Boston Marathon today has sparked the condemnation of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on Sport for Development and Peace, Mr Wilfried Lemke, who condemned the assault that strikes at the heart of the values of tolerance and understanding of sport.

According to media reports, two explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon have, at this moment left at least three dead and 144 injured.

“This appalling and cowardly attack is not only a violent act against innocent civilians, it is also an attack against the values of sport which can foster mutual understanding and friendship”, said Lemke.

Mr. Lemke extended his condolences to the families of the victims and sends his support to those injured in the attack. Mr. Lemke voiced hope that the authorities will bring those behind the attack to justice. The incident is another in a tragic series of attacks against those taking part in sport, as well as spectators.

“It seems by attacking those participating in sport, the perpetrators also try to sabotage peaceful and joyful encounters and the hospitality of the hosts of international or local events and spread a message of despair and fear,” the Special Adviser said, calling on all involved in sport to “defy these despicable acts by continuing to actively harness the positive values of sport.” —- UNOSDP
