Pedro Passos Coelho, Prime Minister of Portugal, receives ICSS to discuss the fight to protect the integrity of sport

Lisbon, Portugal, March 14, 2015: Pedro Passos Coelho, the Prime Minister of Portugal, received Mohammed Hanzab, President of the International Centre for Sport Security (ICSS) and Emanuel Macedo de Medeiros, CEO of ICSS EUROPE, for a special audience to discuss the fight to safeguard sport.

The meeting was also attended by Luis Marques Guedes, Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, and Emídio Guerreiro, Secretary of State of Sport and Youth. It comes ahead of the historic Inter Regional Sports Policy Summit on sports public policy and inter-regional cooperation being organised by the ICSS in Lisbon on 16-17 March.

Mohammed Hanzab, President of the ICSS, said:

“The ICSS is honoured to have had the privilege of meeting the Prime Minister of Portugal to discuss the global fight to protect the integrity of sport. He shares our passion for sport and determination to find solutions to the challenges facing its integrity, good governance and sound development.

“On behalf of the ICSS, I would like to offer my sincere thanks to him and his government for hosting the forthcoming ICSS Inter Regional Sports Policy Summit and for working with us to safeguard sport.”

Emanuel Macedo de Medeiros, CEO of ICSS EUROPE, said:

“Being Portuguese I am immensely proud to have shared this time with the Prime Minister and that the Portuguese government is hosting the forthcoming Summit. It is an illustration of their acknowledgment of ICSS´s vital role and their commitment and dedication to preserving the purity of sport.

“The time has come for action and this pioneering Summit will bring global leaders and senior representatives from leading international organisations to Lisbon to drive much-needed reform. Through the collective power in numbers and influence of some of the world’s major linguistic blocks, and the support of all other key institutions, it will pave the way for a credible, concerted and coordinated approach to tackling the critical issues facing sport around the globe.”

The ICSS Inter Regional Sport Policy Summit is the first of its kind to bring together key decision-makers from major linguistic blocks, Sports ministers and leading international institutions, to develop solutions to the challenges facing the integrity, good governance and sound development of sport.

Representatives from the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), the Commonwealth, the Organisation of Ibero-American States (OEI) and theOrganisation of French-Speaking Countries (Francophonie) will gather in Lisbon for the two-day summit. Also attending will be high-ranking government officials such as Spain’s Secretary of State of Sport and the Secretary General of the Ibero-American Council of Sport, Miguel Cardenal, Portugal’s Secretary of State of Sport and Youth, Emídio Guerreiro, the Rt Hon Lord Jonathan Marland, Chairman of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council, Louise Martin, Chair of CABOS, as well as senior representatives from leading international organisations UNESCO, UNODC, the Council of Europe and the European Commission. Senior representatives from FIFA TMS, UEFA, the Commonwealth Games Federation, the Portuguese Olympic Committee, FA and Players’ Union will also be present. —- By Amelia Fisher-Starzynski
