Opening Ceremonies for World Cadet Challenge

(Hagatna, Guam), Oct 29, 2012: One hundred participants representing seven regions, six continents, and 34 countries will parade the University of Guam Field house Tuesday morning to open the Guam 2012 World Cadet Challenge. The world’s best cadet table tennis players will begin team competitions shortly after the ceremonies. Opening ceremonies beginning at 9 a.m. (ChST).

“This is an international display of sportsmanship,” Guam Governor Eddie Baza Calvo said. “We welcome one and all to witness the ceremonies and the competitions. These young athletes are impressive.”

Portions of the competition will be web-streamed to the International Table Tennis Federation website, www.ittf.com. Scores will be presented in real time and posted following tabulation by referees after each match on the website.

The Governor’s Office, in conjunction with the ITTF, will be sending out news, photos, and video throughout the event, which ends Sunday, November 4. Information also will be posted to the Guam website, www.guamworldchallenge.com, and to the locally-created Facebook site, (search) Guam 2012 World Cadet Challenge.

Players from the following countries are on Guam for the tournament. They ended their third day of practice this morning:

– Team Asia: China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Thailand

– Team Europe: Croatia, England, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland

– Team Latin America: Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, Venezuela

– Team North America: Canada, United States of America

– Team Oceania: Australia, Cook Islands, French Polynesia, New Caledonia, New Zealand

– World Hopes: Czech Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, Hong Kong, Thailand, Romania, Brazil, United States of America, Poland, Canada, Hungary

– Team Guam

– Umpires & Referees: Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, Jamaica, Italy, Australia
