Kuala Lumpur, Oct 17, 2013: After an absence of three years, the BWF World Superseries Finals return to Malaysia this December. Last held in Kuala Lumpur in 2009, the season-ending tournament of the BWF World Superseries tour will be held 11-15 December and will be organised by TSA.
Traditionally, the five-day spectacle brings together the top eight individuals or pairs in each category – Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles – for a shot at sharing US $ 500,000 in prize money and the glory of being crowned finals champion.
Home to millions of badminton players and fans, Malaysia has ardently supported badminton over the years. The country has produced a number of world-renowned players, including Rashid Sidek and current world No. 1 Men’s Singles star, Lee Chong Wei. Malaysia aspires to become as one of the sport’s biggest support bases internationally and is therefore seeking to develop and grow badminton by establishing more badminton academies and programs as well as by hosting more prestigious tournaments, including the world-recognised BWF World Superseries Finals.
“We anticipate some great finals in Malaysia and we look forward to the best performers on the Superseries circuit giving their best.
“We are in the second half of the Superseries and there is still a lot of intrigue regarding who will qualify for the finals,” said BWF Secretary General Thomas Lund.
The 12-event tour resumed last month with the China Masters followed by the Yonex Open Japan. The Superseries focus has shifted to Europe this week with the Denmark Open being held in Odense ahead of next week’s French Open in Paris.
The last two events will be held next month: the China Open (Superseries Premier) and Hong Kong Open. —- BWF
