Korean Air Contributing to World Peace Through Table Tennis

London, Nov 24, 2011: Korean Air is sponsoring the “2011 Qatar Peace and Sport Table Tennis Cup,” an event hosted by two international organisations, ‘Peace and Sport’ and the International Table Tennis Federation, in Qatar 21-22 November 2011 (Korean Air Contributing).

The sponsorship is the continuation of Hanjin Group’s as well as Korean Air Chairman and CEO Yang Ho Cho’s effort to support world peace through sports. Chairman Cho is also acting as the current ambassador of the ‘Peace and Sport’ foundation.

Chairman Cho has served as the 10th ambassador of Peace and Sport and the first to be appointed from Asia since February 2010. The Peace and Sport Foundation is a non-profit organisation that promotes peace by raising awareness about the values of sport. It was created by Joel Bouzou, an Olympic medalist, and is under the patronage of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco.

A total of ten nations will participate in the Qatar Peace and Sport Table Tennis Cup, including the Republic of Korea, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Pakistan and India that will compete in doubles tournaments for both men and women.

Korean Air’s Chairman and CEO Yang Ho Cho said:  “The first Peace and Sport Table Tennis Cup is set to be an historic occasion for the sport and also for sending out peace messages through sport.  I believe we can promote friendly relations and dialogue between players, spectators and their nations. Sport is a neutral territory that crosses all barriers and hostilities.”

Through this event, knowledge and experience of how sports contribute to world peace will be shared, as barriers between countries are broken down. Athens Olympic Gold medallist Ryu Seung Min and Beijing Olympics Bronze medallist Kim Kyung Ah will participate from Republic of Korea.

Chairman Cho is well known for promoting the power of sport to help make a more peaceful world. Since appointed as Chairman of the Korea Table Tennis Association, Chairman Cho has been improving the training program for the Korean national table tennis team to foster better players, referees and coaches.

He also has been actively exchanging table tennis skills and expertise with other countries such as China, Russia and Sweden.

He has especially enhanced Korea’s international status by demonstrating his sports leadership as the chairman of 2018 Pyeong Chang winter Olympics bidding committee. As a result of his passion and contribution, Pyeong Chang won the winter Olympic bid.
