IWF Press Release: Russian President Dmitry Medvedev presented on 22 November 2011 the highest state awards of the Republic of Russia at a ceremony held at his Presidential Residence in Gorki, outside Moscow, Russia. The Russian President gave the Order of Friendship award to the President of the International Weightlifting Federation IWF president Dr Tamas Ajan “for his contribution to strengthening the cooperation in the field of physical culture and sports with the Russian Federation”.
At the same time, the IOC President Jacques Rogge, Lamine Diack, President of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and Rene Fasel, President of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) were awarded with the Order of Friendship by President Medvedev.
At the ceremony a total of about 150 members of the Russian national teams who participated in the 2011 world championships in various sports were present, including the weightlifting world champions and the President of the Russian Weightlifting Federation Sergey Syrtsov.
PARTNER ORGANISATION FIFTH IF FORUM IN LAUSANNE:
The fifth edition of the annual IF Forum took place in Lausanne November 14-16, 2011, and once again offered representatives from International Federations an opportunity to discuss important current issues and share ideas about best management practices, through a series of workshops, case studies and discussion groups. This year’s event focused on Sport and the City and Building an Effective Federation, and will also featured an exclusive Media Seminar to provide on-camera training for Federation members. The IWF was also represented. The IF Forum was organised by SportAccord Convention in conjunction with SportAccord, ASOIF and AIOWF, and with the support of the City of Lausanne/Canton of Vaud.
CALENDAR EVENTS: BELGOROD – TECHNICAL VISIT:
Attila Adamfi, IWF Competition Director together with Anton Kislyakov, Russian Weightlifting Federation Vice President visited Belgorod, Russia in order to coordinate the preparation of the IWF Grand Prix – President’s Cup taking place on December 16-18, 2011.
The city is very excited to host such international event, the official hotel and venues are ready to welcome participants from all over the world. The world’s strongest weightlifters as well as the strongest representatives of the Russian team are invited to participate in this tournament.
Live TV coverage in High Definition with 14 cameras will be provided to broadcast this successful event deploying entertaining elements aiming to attract the attention of the viewers. 2011 ASIAN INTER-CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS TASHKENT, UZBEKISTAN:
The Asian Inter-Club Championships was officially opened by Mr. Jasur Akramov, 1st Deputy Minister on Sports Affairs of Uzbekistan on 25 November 2011. Tashkent already hosted the 2010 Asian Youth and Junior Championships and will organize the 2013 Youth World Championships. The enthusiastic Organizing Committee, led by UWF General Secretary, Mr. Shakrillo Makhmudov made again an outstanding effort to fulfill the athletes’ requirements on the highest level.
It’s remarkable that two years ago, the Uzbeks were the host of the Asian Inter-Club Championships that did very well in handling the competitions. These championships are held after the World Senior Championships and provide a field of an evaluation of the weightlifters or the countries that couldn’t participate in the Worlds or might not do well in that event. 11 countries and approximately 123 athletes are expected to participate at Asian Cup & Interclubs Weightlifting Championships (AFG, IRI, KOR, THA, KGZ, PAK, PLE, QAT, TJK, TKM, and UZB).
26TH SEA GAMES INDONESIA 2011 OVERALL:
The 26th Sea Games Indonesia 2011 was held in Jakarta-Palembang from 18-21 November. Weightlifting competitions were held in the GOR Bulu Tangkis, Jakabaring Sport Complex. Lifters from 9 countries participated in the competition, and gold medals were awarded to Indonesian, Thai and Vietnamese lifters in the Total.Six countries managed to grab medals; however Thailand (9 Gold, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze) and Indonesia (4 Gold, 8 Silver and 2 Bronze) were highly superior according to the medal tally.

OLYMPIC NEWS: ‘LONDON 2012 WEIGHTLIFTING’ PREPARES FOR ITS FIRST TEST!
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) will deliver its ExCeL Sport Test Events over three weeks during November / December 2011. Branded as the ‘London Prepares’ Weightlifting International Invitational – the Olympic Test Event will be held at ExCeL, London from 10 – 11 December 2011 (together with the Wrestling Test Event being held currently in an adjacent hall). This follows the Fencing and Taekwondo competitions that will be held in the same arena in previous weeks.
Matthew Curtain, London 2012 Weightlifting Manager has reported that 48 athletes, 32 team officials, 10 international technical officials and the 2 technical delegates (representing 26 National Federations in total) have been invited by participate, all of whom will be provided with suitable accommodation, full board and internal transportation for the 5 nights whilst staying in the Olympic City.
‘Athletes are always the focus of our operations and therefore, it is only correct that the vast majority of our financial resources have been allocated to this important client group’ said Mr. Curtain. The invited National Federations are as follows: AUS, AUT, AZE, BLR, CAN, CHN, CYP, DEN, ESP, EST, FIN, FRA, GBR, GER, HUN, JPN, KAZ, MAS, NGR, NOR, POL, ROU, RUS, SWE, THA & USA. Of particular note, the Organising Committee awaits the participation of Ilya Ilyin (KAZ), 2008 Olympic Champion, ZHOU Lulu (CHN) 2011 World Champion, KANG Yue (CHN), 2010 & 2011 World Junior Champion and XIANG Yanmei (CHN) 2011 World Championships Silver Medallist.
Men’s 94kg & +105kg categories / Women’s 69kg & +75kg categories will be contested over the weekend event. Great Britain will be represented by Peter Kirkbride (94kg), Sonny Webster (94kg), Joe Muskett (+105kg), Natasha Perdue (69kg), Zoe Smith (69kg), Tamás Fehér (Head Coach) and Dave Sawyer (Coach).

OBITUARIES
WEIGHTLIFTING MOURNS: VASILY ALEXEEV DIED
Vasily Alexeev, double Olympic champion in Munich 1972 and in Montreal 1976, eight times World Champion, Honored Master of Sports of the USSR, and Honored Coach of the USSR died on 25 November 2011. Vasily set 80 world records and 81 records of the USSR, including eternal world record Total in three lifts (645kg). Alexeev was a Member of the Weightlifting Hall of Fame 1993 and voted as the all-time best sportsman of his country. Probably he was the best known weightlifter of all times in the world.
7 January 2012 he would have turned 70 years old. At home in the city of Rostov region a great celebration was prepared, however since early November he was hospitalized in Badenhausen, Germany at a cardio clinic where he died. The IWF offers its deep condolences to his family and the Russian Weightlifting Federation.
IWF DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM:
INTERNATIONAL WEIGHTLIFTING SEMINAR IN UZBEKISTAN
In conjunction with the Asian Inter-Club Championships and in the framework of the IWF Development Program, the Uzbekistan Weightlifting Federation organized an International Weightlifting Seminar for coaches and referees. The Seminar was inaugurated by Shakrillo Makhmudov, UWF General Secretary and Attila Adamfi, IWF Competition Director. For the referee part Mrs. Reiko Chinen (JPN) intervened as expert and for the coaching topics Mr Andras Szabo (HUN) Nutrition Expert hold lectures about modern nutrition and related issues.
