Gymnastic: Courtesy visit Tokyo 2020

LAUSANNE (SUI), July 10, 2012: Courtesy visit, Even before the 2012 Olympic Games begin, the 2020 edition is already looming on the horizon for the next generation of up-and-coming gymnasts.

That was certainly very much the case at the FIG office in Lausanne on 22 June, when it played host to Masato Mizuno, CEO of the Tokyo 2020 Bid Committee.

Mr Mizuno met with the FIG Secretary General, André Gueisbuhler, as well as the heads of each of the four Olympic disciplines at the FIG Sports Department.

His visit provided the opportunity for broad-ranging discussion about the Tokyo bid dossier, and on the expectations of the gymnastics, which is of course one of the Blue Riband sports within the Olympic programme, and has been a fixture ever since the start of the modern Games in 1896.

Not surprisingly, there was plenty of focus on the recent Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, which took place in Tokyo’s Metropolitan Gymnasium in October 2011.

Those championships were a huge hit in Japan, a country which boasts a rich gymnastics tradition, not least in Artistic, with three-times All-around world champion Kohei Uchimura (2009, 2010, 2011) the latest in a long line of great Japanese athletes in the discipline.

There is little doubt that, should the IOC opt to award the 2020 Games to Tokyo, they will be every bit as much a national and international success as when the Japanese capital last hosted the Olympics back in 1964. —– FIG
