Lausanne, Sept 20, 2012: The third and ultimate FIG Foundations of Gymnastics Course of the year took place at Centro Nacional de Alto Rendimento (CNAR) in Mexico City (MEX) from September 13 – 20, 2012.

Fifteen participants from Mexico and three from Brazil attended the Spanish language course that focused on the four F’s of Gymnastics for All: Fun, Fitness, Friendship, Fundamentals.

A press conference with the presence of Mexican Gymnastics Federation President Gustavo Salazar, the President of CNAR Gustavo Sanciprián and the three FIG experts Carmen Gomez Alcala (MEX), Ximena Rodrigues (CHI) and Rogério Valério (POR) was held on September 13.

The official opening was attended by Naomi Aoki, Vice-President of the Mexican Gymnastics Federation.

The participants, most of whom have already taken part in at least one edition of the World Gymnaestrada, were very much involved in all course activities. It was a wonderful and challenging experience to see them so thoroughly committed to the Gymnastics for All philosophy, and to enjoy the quality facilities and equipment made available for this course.

Special thanks to the Mexican Gymnastics Federation and its staff on a magnificent job logistically; they were always there to help.

About FIG Foundations of Gymnastics Courses

The Foundations of Gymnastics course underpins the FIG’s Academy programme and is the starting place for coaches wishing to work in any discipline of Gymnastics, with any age group or in a competitive or recreational field.

The FIG Academy programme consists of the Foundations of Gymnastics Course and three levels of coaches’ education, for each competitive discipline. The mission of the Academy programme is to provide a framework for the delivery of standardised coach education for Gymnastics worldwide that is based upon principles of sport science, health, best practice and the nature of the developing child.

While the Level 1 – 3 Courses have a high performance orientation the Foundations of Gymnastics Course has a cross-discipline focus and is therefore highly recommended as the starting point for any coach education and training scheme.

The underpinning philosophy of the Foundations of Gymnastics Course is that gymnasts, regardless of their age, abilities or training program, should: have FUN, gain FITNESS, acquire good FUNDAMENTALS and enjoy healthy interpersonal FRIENDSHIP.

The entire Foundations of Gymnastics course comprises a total of 42 study units, each of 45 minutes duration as well as 4 examination units. All course units involve both theoretical and practical presentations with emphasis being given to practical sessions. —- FIG
