FIG Aerobic Gymnastics World Cup B, Dress rehearsal for Aerobic Worlds at Azores

LAUSANNE (SUI), FIG Office, May 15, 2012: Aerobic Worlds, The FIG Aerobic Gymnastics World Cup in Ponta Delgada (POR), an event that was held for the first time in 2010, returns to the Azores on May 18 – 20, 2012 for its second edition.

The city’s Teatro Micaelense will set the backdrop for competitions in Men’s and Women’s Individuals, Mixed Pairs, Trios and Groups for a total of 37 gymnasts from 10 different nations. As an event that features the third in a series of five World Cups this year, the tournament is drawing a lot of attention as the ultimate competition in the run-up to the 12th World Championships in Sofia (BUL) in early June.

The strong Spanish and French delegations stand out on the roster with the defending World Champions in Mixed Pairs Sara Moreno and Vicente Lli (ESP) as well as runners-up Aurelie Joly and Julien Chaninet (FRA). Moreover, 2012 World Cup Gold medallists Ivan Parejo (ESP) and Benjamin Garavel (FRA) are both contenders for the title in Men’s Individual. Italy has entered 2010 World runner-up Giulia Bianchi, who participates in her first World Cup this year and competes against Moreno and Joly in Women’s Individual, while Portugal’s own Sara Sardinha tries to repeat her podium from 2010 in Ponta Delgada. France and Russia are favourites in the Trio category, the latter entering the only Group in this event.

An International Open Tournament is scheduled to take place parallel to the World Cup, and children and teachers from the local public schools will be invited to sit in on training and competitions at the Theatre Micaelense.

The Gymnastics Federation of Portugal cast back to the organisation of numerous FIG World Cups in all disciplines as well as a number of international Aerobic Gymnastics events including the 2005 European Championships in Coimbra.

The hosting Club “Clube de Actividades Gímnicas de Ponta Delgada (CAGPD)”, which co-organised the 2010 edition of the Ponta Delgada World Cup and the International Open, was created in 2008 as a public utility institution and has since emerged in the continuity of the work performed by Corpore Ginásio. With several national and international titles, the main activity of the two institutions is Aerobic Gymnastics, with classes for children starting from three years of age. In the different age categories (Juniors, Age Groups 1, 2 and Seniors) there are “Regional Youth Talents”, “National Team” and “High Performance” gymnasts.

After a successful year 2011 with National Champions in six categories, CAGPD won the Portugal National Cup in Aerobic Gymnastics for the fifth consecutive year and counts a number of medals from several international tournaments in 2012.
