Judge suspected of professional misconduct is exonerated Rhythmic Gymnastics Technical Committee Overruled

Lausanne (SUI) / FIG Office, May 11, 2012: Overruled, Following the FIG Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup which took place in Kiev (UKR) on 16-18 March 2012, the discipline’s Technical Committee, headed by Mrs Maria Szyszkowska (POL), confirmed its intention to issue a written warning to the South African judge Annette Nel and to ban her from officiating at the London Olympic Games in July and August, as a result of a score awarded to the French team that was deemed contentious.

The case file was passed to the FIG Disciplinary Commission so that it could examine the Technical Committee’s request. The Commission duly convened on 1 May 2012 at the Federation’s Head Office in Lausanne, under the chairmanship of Paul Engelmann (SUI), and with the participation of Nihad Hagverdiyev (AZE) and Rached Gharbi (TUN).

Having reviewed and examined the charge leveled at Mrs Nel, the Disciplinary Commission decided not to issue a warning under Article 4.3.2 of the FIG Statutes and not to ban Mrs Nel from serving as a judge during the London Olympic Games in July and August this year.

Notably, the Disciplinary Commission expressed its conviction that there was no evidence whatsoever of malicious intent in Mrs Nel’s judging, and that the error for which she was reprimanded in Kiev does not in any way represent the norm, but was, in fact, very much a one-off occurrence. The Commission will inform all relevant parties of the results of its investigation, which confirmed Mrs Nel to be an experienced judge with a spotless reputation in the international community of rhythmic gymnastics officials.
