RWCL Opens Rugby World Cup 2015 and 2019 Broadcast Tender Process in France

Dublin-Ireland, April 24, 2012: Rugby World Cup Limited (RWCL) today announced the launch of the tender process for the French Broadcast rights to Rugby World Cup 2015 and Rugby World Cup 2019 (Broadcast Tender).

The first phase of a detailed and thorough process will be the opening of an Invitation to Tender (ITT). An ITT document will be distributed to qualifying interested parties on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 with responses requested by close of business Thursday, May 31, 2012. Interested parties with the necessary stature, experience, financial resources and technical expertise will be considered to be qualified to participate in the bid process.

RWCL Chairman Bernard Lapasset said: “Rugby World Cup continues to go from strength to strength, reaching out to more men, women and children in new and existing Rugby markets around the world.”

“Central to this growth has been a broadcast strategy that grows the profile and prestige of the RWC brand, while delivering strong revenues for the IRB to reinvest in the development of the Game worldwide. In that regard, the French broadcast market has been a major success story for the tournament and ultimately Rugby worldwide.”

Rugby World Cup 2011 in New Zealand achieved impressive broadcast figures within France. The Final between New Zealand and France attracted the largest television audience for the calendar year with an average of 13.4 million viewers, a peak of 18.1 million and an audience share of 82 per cent despite the early kick-off time.

Seventy-three per cent of France’s total population of 63 million people watched at least 15 minutes of RWC 2011 action.
