Saint Petersburg, Russia, Oct 18, 2013: Opening, The first day of 2013 World Combat Games was a great start to the 9 days of competitions. Sumo and Sambo had its first events today with finals in the afternoon.
SUMO
In Sumo, with the venue of CKK Peterburgsky the largest of the three venues, the competitions took place in Men’s Middleweight and Heavyweight and Women’s Middleweight and Heavyweight categories.
Men’s Middleweight category
Gold – ITO, Ryo (JPN)
Silver – OCHURKHUU, Usukhbayar (MGL)
Bronze – KAZIEV, Atsamaz (RUS), IERMAKOV, Kostiantyn (UKR).
Men’s Heavyweight category

SAMBO
Eighty-five athletes from 39 countries representing five continents will compete in six weight categories for medals in the Sambo tournament during World Combat Games. The Sambo wrestlers have two days for this at the Arena Sports Complex. The Sambo tournament started today with bouts in two women’s weight categories – 48 and 68 kg – and in the men’s 90 kg category. The medal results are as following:

The Opening Press Conference took place at the Itar-Tass offices in Saint Petersburg with speakers including SportAccord President Marius Vizer, Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation Vitaliy Mutko, The Governor of Saint Petersburg Georgiy Poltavchenko, Chairman of 2013 World Combat Games Sergey Soloveychik, Head of 2013 World Combat Games Directorate Pavel Zhuravlev, Co-Chairman of the Russian Union of Martial Arts (RUMA) Yuriy Trutnev, Co-Chairman of the Russian Union of Martial Arts Sergey Kirienko. President Marius Vizer underlined that “the World Combat Games are the proof that the Martial Arts and Combat Sports are one family of sports which supports each other and this event is a great opportunity to show how their values can be transferred to societies.”
The second day of 2013 World Combat Games will continue with competitions of Judo, Muaythai, Sambo, Savate, Sumo. —- sportaccord
