DÜSSELDORF GRAND PRIX (Olympic Qualification) Kicks off the 2015 World JudoTour

Dusseldorf, Feb 20, 2015: If Düsseldorf is the capital city of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia and is an international business and financial centre renowned for its fashion and trade fairs, this weekend, the city will also become the World Judo Capital as the first event of the 2015 World Judo Tour will be held in the Mitsubishi Elecric Halle from Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd. Today, the official draw and press conference took place at the Nikko Hotel in the presence of the 75 heads of delegations, representing the 547 athletes (327 men – 220 women) engaged in the tournament.

Naser Al-Tamimi, the IJF General Treasurer, welcomed the delegates: “It is an honor for me to welcome you all in Düsseldorf for this first event of the season. We usually start the tour with the Paris Grand Slam*, but this year I am happy to see so many athletes and delegations in Germany. In the name of the IJF President, Mr. Marius Vizer, I wish you good luck during the next three days and thanks to the great efforts of the German Judo Federation, I am sure that you will enjoy your stay here.“

Peter Frese, the German Judo Federation President said: “Dear IJF Executive Committee members, dear heads of delegations and referees, dear officials and dear judo friends; I warmly thank you for coming to Düsseldorf. Having so many athletes is a challenge and we have a lot to do to make sure that this event will be a success. But I am also sure that we will be good hosts. Thanks to the IJF we will deliver an outstanding first event of the season. “

Vladimir Barta, the IJF Head Sports Director, declared: “As Peter Frese said, it is a challenge to organize such a big event and the challenge is even bigger when it is the first competition of a full Olympic qualification year. In 2015, every single point will count on the way to Rio 2016. “

Judo for Ethiopians

The press conference, which was held after the official draw, offered the opportunity to present the project ‘Judo for Ethiopians’ led by Mr. Johannes Daxbacher, an IJF Military and Police commissionner, and strongly supported by the German Government, the German Judo Federation and the IJF. Dr. Tsegaye Degineh, President of the Judo and Ju-Jitsu Association of Ethiopia, explained: “It is a real honor to be in Düsseldorf and to see so many great champions. I am moved by the fact that among those athletes there will be two Ethiopians. Thanks to the great support that we have been receiving for many years, we are now able to participate in such a big competition.”

Mr. Martin Fink, representing the German Ministry of International Cooperation and Development, said: “Access to sport is a basic right to everybody, especially in Africa. Sport represents a common language, which is synonymous of tolerance, discipline, respect and education. Our government developed the concept of ‘1,000 chances for Africa – More space for sports’. The program that has been running in Ethiopia perfectly illustrates that concept.”

Mr. Zewdu Gebreweld, representing the Ethiopian Embassy in Berlin, explained that he did judo when he was a child, and still now he can feel the physical and mental benefits of it: “Judo can really help our country and society to improve and we will keep going supporting the Judo for Ethiopian project.”
Peter Frese, the German Judo Federation President and also a Judo for Peace commissionner, expressed his feelings with emotion in his voice: “Thanks to Hannes Daxbacher, we are able to help our Ethiopian brothers. During the Grand Prix, we will collect judogi that will be donated to Ethiopia. If it looks small from our point of view, we know that it represents a lot for our friends. This is what judo is all about.”

Before the conclusion of the press conference, Mr. Daxbacher read the statement that Mr. Wilfried Lemke, the Special Adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace, sent: “Judo is primarily seen through the ‘Judo-values’ such as respect, responsibility, or the equal rights of men and women and not only as an Olympic combat sport.

I was able to personally see and experience the ‘Judo for Peace’ and ‘Judo for Children’ projects of the International Judo Federation. Among others, I visited the Judo project in Burundi. I am very satisfied by the success and sustainability of those initiatives. That’s why Judo is also part of our ’Youth Leadership Camps’.

In a very short period of time, the project ‘Judo for Ethiopians’ was born out of the commitment of Mr. Johannes Daxbacher from Germany, especially with the aim of the International Judo Federation to include Ethiopia in the ‘World Judo Family’, a large network of organizations, friends and supporters.’

Were also present during the press conference: Mr. Sandro Dircks (USIP General Secretary), Mr. Vladimir Barta (IJF Head Sports Director), Hana Neri Sira (-63kg), Mr. Mohamed Meridja (IJF Education and Coaching Director), Yared Negusse Dechassa (-60kg) and Mr. Johannes Curtius (German Olympic Sports Confederation).
