Milan, Italy, September 24, 2019: This year’s The Best FIFA Football Awards™ ceremony took centre stage at Milan’s historic Teatro alla Scala this evening and crowned two household names as the players of the season: Megan Rapinoe Lionel Messi/Megan Rapinoe Lionel Messi.
The Argentina and FC Barcelona star was recognised by FIFA as the player of the year for the sixth time in his career − an absolute record – while Rapinoe capped an impeccable season that saw her lead the USA to their second consecutive FIFA Women’s World Cup™ title in France.
The Americans’ success in France also gave Jill Ellis the title of Women’s Coach of the Year, an accolade that, on the men’s side, picked up by German Jürgen Klopp, who coached Liverpool FC to UEFA Champions League glory.
Brazilian Alisson Becker, also of Liverpool FC, chosen as The Best FIFA Goalkeeper, a distinction that also introduced this year for women’s football and saw Dutch Sari van Veenendaal voted as maiden recipient.

• FIFA Fair Play Award: Marcelo Bielsa and the Leeds United squad
The Argentinian head coach and his players at Leeds United were commended for the act of sportsmanship during a decisive EFL Championship match against Aston Villa on 28 April 2019.

The winners of The Best player and coach awards were determined through a voting process in which four groups had an equal say: football fans, selected media representatives, and the captains and head coaches of national teams from around the globe.
