Monaco, Nov 18, 2014: The IAAF Council, chaired by President Lamine Diack, met in the Fairmont Hotel, Monaco, for the first of three days of its traditional autumn session on Tuesday (18).
Dominating today’s meeting were the bid presentations by the potential hosts for four IAAF World Athletics Series (WAS) events: the 2019 IAAF World Championships, 2018 IAAF Continental Cup, 2017 IAAF World Cross Country Championships and 2017 IAAF World Youth Championships (events given in voting order).
Doha to host the 2019 IAAF World Championships
Doha (QAT) was selected by a vote of Council over Barcelona (ESP) and Eugene (USA) for the right to host the 17th edition of the IAAF World Championships, the premier competition in the IAAF World Athletics Series portfolio.
The voting was as follows:
First round: Doha – 12, Eugene – 9, Barcelona – 6 (Barcelona was eliminated).
Second round: Doha – 15, Eugene – 12.
“I am sure that in Doha we will have a wonderful edition of the World Championships. I am convinced they are committed through sport to developing their country and their community, and they are doing the right things,” commented IAAF President Lamine Diack.
President Diack also offered his thanks to all three candidates: “They were the best presentations we have ever had.”
The 2015 edition of the IAAF World Championships will be hosted by Beijing (CHN) from 22-30 August; followed in 2017 by London (GBR) from 5-13 August that year.
Ostrava to host the 2018 IAAF Continental Cup
Ostrava (CZE) was chosen to host the next edition of the IAAF Continental Cup after winning a vote against Bydgoszcz (POL).
The Czech city, which has got a long pedigree in staging top quality athletics events, including IAAF World Athletics Series competitions, showed an impressive commitment to staging the Cup, an impression which was reinforced with an outstanding presentation.
It had a high powered team in Monaco, with the bid led by the country’s Minister for Education, Youth and Sports Marcel Chladek and the Czech Athletics Federation President Libor Varhanik.
The last edition of the IAAF Continental Cup took place in Marrakech (MAR) on 13-14 March 2014.
Kampala to host the 2017 IAAF World Cross Country Championships
This IAAF World Athletics Series competition will go back to Africa a decade after the IAAF World Cross Country Championships was last held on the continent, in neighbouring Kenya.
The Ugandan capital won the right to stage the competition after winning a vote against Manama (BRN).
The Hon. Charles Bakabulindi, Honorary State Minister of Education and Sport, and Ugandan Athletics Federation Domenic Otucet led the successful bid for Uganda’s first ever IAAF World Athletics Series competition.
The next edition of the IAAF World Cross Country Championships takes place in Guiyang (CHN), 28 March 2015.
Nairobi to host the 2017 IAAF World Youth Championships
The Kenyan capital was the only candidate for this IAAF competition but the Nairobi delegation convincingly persuaded the IAAF Council to endorse its right to host this event, the second IAAF World Athletics Series competition to be held in the country after the 2007 IAAF World Cross Country Championships.
The Nairobi bid team included Dr Hassan Wario Arero, the Cabinet Principal Secretary at the Ministry for Sports Culture and the Arts as well as local government and Athletics Kenya officials.
Also included in the delegation were the well-known athletes Mercy Cherono and Jairus Birech, the latter the 2014 Diamond Race winner in the men’s 3000m steeplechase.
