Besides the regular meeting, the CGA Workshops and the Strategic Review Workshops were very beneficial. In the Workshop on Marketing, the proposal of the Australian GCA to permit the competitions attires and the tracksuits to have more than one sponsor’s logo was discussed at length. There was also much discussions on the Canadian’s Capacity Support Programme (CSP) for CGAs and the utilization of the Zeus programme for management of CGAs Contingents participating in the Commonwealth Games.
The workshops on the Strategic Review Report prepared by pmp legacy had full attendance with much discussions on the recommendations on the following items of study; Vision, Governance and management, Sports programme, Games products, Bidding process, Stakeholder support, CGA/Sports development, The Commonwealth, Brand and positioning, Broadcasting, Sponsorship and other commercial opportunities, Overall summary and action plan.
An expert on broadcasting presented a position paper on the broadcasting status of the Commonwealth Games and proposed that the Sports Programme of the Commonwealth Games should be trimmed from 17 to 16 and also to replace some of the less attractive sports with more attractive ones. The Workshop noted that when studying the sports, the attractiveness of the disciplines and events of each sport should also be evaluated. On the Bidding process, it was generally agreed that while there appeared to be a shortage of bidding cities/CGAs, there are sufficient potential host cities CGAs and that the CGF should not try to conduct an IOC style of bidding, which is very expensive and causees too much embarrassment and ill-will among the bidding cities/CGAs. Some examples of the unfriendly feelings at the end of some past bidding cities were cited, the latest being the losing bid city of Hambantota of Sri Lanka for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
The 2012 Annual General Assembly of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) was conducted very efficiently in a orderly fashion. The normal reporting by the Regional Vice President, the Financial Report of CGF, the host cities of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, the Samoa 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games and the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.
On the Strategic Review recommendations and action plan, the General Assembly appealed to the Executive Board not to rush into implementing any of the recommendations, without further study and evaluation as well as taking into consideration the many comments raised and will be raised by the CGAs.
Overall the 2012 CGF General Assembly was well organized by the Uganda Commonwealth Games Association. The official meetings were well managed starting punctually and ending in accordance with the programme. The social functions were also well organized with very warm hospitality of the government of Uganda as well as the people of Uganda and the Uganda Commonwealth Games Federation.
