Lausanne, Sept 19, 2012: The theme of the congress is “Enhancing Performance: The Healthy Aquatic Athlete”. It is recognised that a healthy athlete is one that can perform to their potential. Physicians and Scientists play an important role in providing the opportunity for the athlete and their coaches to deliver elite performance. The 17th FINA World Sports Medicine Congress aims to bring world leaders together to share best practice and update our understanding. In aquatics, we share five disciplines and have a boarder responsibility to Masters athletes and those who exercise for the benefits of exercise on health.
The 17th FINA World Sports Medicine Congress will cover all these areas and will therefore be relevant to many sports and health care professionals. The faculty will provide background understanding as well as an introduction to the latest concepts. There will be a b focus on injury and illness prevention. The scientific sessions will provide an excellent opportunity to present original scientific work at an international congress. Coaches and team staff will leave with an improved understanding of the roles of sports physicians and scientists within their programmes.
The Congress will be delivered as key note lectures, small group workshops, podium and poster presentations of original scientific papers. There will be ample time to network and have informal discussions with the faculty. As usual, proceedings will open with the Bleasdale Memorial Lecture. It is a great honour to be invited to give this lecture. The Bleasdale lecturer for this Congress will be announced at a later date.
The Congress will encompass a wide variety of issues relating to aquatic athletes including:
Ethical use of drugs in sport
Nutritional supplementation – the case for and against
Musculoskeletal injuries of the shoulder and hip & groin
Maintaining health in the aquatic athlete – a team approach
Exercise in heat and warm water
