IAAF Indoor Permit Meeting season

IAAF Indoor Permit Meeting season

Monaco – Jan 18, 2013: Two weeks tomorrow, Saturday 2 February, the starter’s gun will sound the beginning of the2013 IAAF Indoor Permit Meeting season, an action-packed three week series of the world’s six finest indoor athletics competitions.

The series begins with a triple-header weekend. The Weltklasse takes place in Karlsruhe, Germany, on Saturday 2 February while on the same day across the Atlantic in Boston, USA, its Indoor Grand Prix is staged. On Sunday 3 February the action returns to Europe with the ‘Russian Winter’ meeting in Moscow, Russia, which is followed by competitions in Gent, Belgium (Sunday 10 Feb), Birmingham, UK (Saturday 16 Feb) and Stockholm, Sweden (Thursday 21 Feb).

Last year witnessed three World indoor records: the Combined Events marks of USA’s Ashton Eaton (6645 points) in the Heptathlon (9/10 March 2012) and Ukraine’s Natallia Dobrynska (5013 points) in the Pentathlon (9 March 2012) at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Istanbul, Turkey, and the 5.01m Pole Vault record of Russia’s Yelena Isinbayeva in Stockholm, Sweden (23 February 2012).

This indoor athletics season does not have the focal point of an IAAF World Athletics Series event. After a most successful celebration of the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Istanbul last year, we must now wait until Sopot, Poland (7 – 9 March 2014) for the next global indoor championship.

However, with the 2013 athletics year as a whole pointing towards the 14th edition of the IAAF World Championships, Moscow, Russia (10 – 18 August 2013), it is true to say that all performances, including those set indoors, will be assessed in relation to that forthcoming outdoor championship.
