Lausanne (SUI), FIG Office, June 7, 2012: Genuine, An inevitable icon on the international Aerobic scene and an efficient communicator and talent creator, Magnus Scheving (ISL), 48 years old, is the living success story of an elite athlete who in his second career harnesses sport information to teach children.
A success story par excellence!
Scheving went from being the 1992 National Aerobic Champion in Individuals to Scandinavian Champion in 1993, crowning his career with two European Champion titles in 1994 and 1995. Once retired from active competition, Magnus Scheving turned to the world of communication and television to make his life-long dreams come true: to create an educational television series for children. Thus Lazy Town was born, with its hero Sportacus. 52 episodes, each 24 minutes long, were aired worldwide, in Iceland naturally, but also in France, Canada and the United States.
In the story, Sportacus, played by Magnus Scheving, invites children to eat healthy, stay away from junk food, play outdoors, keep active and avoid becoming a couch potato in front of the television or computer. His message has reached boys and girls everywhere. In 2010, the United States of America’s First Lady, Michelle Obama, joined in Scheving’s cause, promoting health among young American athletes.
The admirable project was applauded by FIG President Prof. Bruno Grandi when he met briefly with Scheving in Sofia (BUL) at the recent Aerobic Gymnastics World Championships. And though their lives differ in many respects, these two men found a common ground in the sporting ideal: an active lifestyle, good health, wellness, sport justice. Two destinies; two athletic careers in the pursuit of life; two real-life experiences to inspire today’s youth.
