Oberhofen-Switzerland, May 24, 2012: Skiing Agenda, The meetings of the Committees, the Council as well as the General Assembly will all take place at the Kangwonland hotel. An exhibition featuring the Candidates for the FIS World Championships will be arranged in the entrance foyer. The traditional Congress excursion on Thursday will visit the future Olympic site of the PyeongChang 2018 Games.
The meetings of eight different Cross-Country Committees (Popular Skiing, Roller Skiing, Youth and Children, Cross-Country World Cup and Continental Cup, Rules and Control, Executive Board and Cross-Country Committee) will take place from Monday 28th May to Wednesday 30th May.
On several agendas, there are items to develop the Cross-Country sport in all its aspects but no major changes are foreseen. One of the main points will be the finalization of the FIS Cross-Country World Cup calendar 2012/2013, which will be featuring the seventh? edition of the FIS Tour de Ski and the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Val di Fiemme (ITA).
A very important topic on the agenda will be coordination between all three Nordic disciplines. “One of the key points for the future is coordination of World Cup calendars of the three disciplines. Cooperation in finding good starting times is another cornerstone for the successful development of Cross-Country Skiing and all Nordic disciplines,” says FIS Cross-Country Race Director Jürg Capol.
Other important points on the agenda include the development of the World Cup and FIS Tour de Ski rules. The Rules and Control Sub-Committee together with FIS Cross-Country Assistant Race Director Pierre Mignerey have been working for two years on the update of the ICR so that it reflects changes in Cross-Country Skiing and becomes better structured.
Thanks to a very active Athletes’ Commission and intensive work by Kikkan Randall (USA) and Sami Jauhojaervi (FIN), the Cross-Country Committee is in direct contact with the athletes and receives their feedback. The athletes representatives are travelling to Korea with several items e.g. adjustment of prize money distribution, etc.
Last but not least, the Cross-Country Youth and Children’s Sub-Committee will discuss the last season and various programs for support and development of young skiers. The Sub-Committee for Popular Skiing has a challenging task to tackle with the growing interest in popular competitions and the current co-existence of three (competing?) series, FIS Marathon Cup, Worldloppet and the Ski Classics.
All these points and more will be thoroughly discussed at the Cross-Country Committee and recommendations provided to the FIS Council, which will take the final decisions at its meetings during the Congress Week.
