Record number of countries to participate in Saransk – IAAF World Race Walking Cup

Monte Carlo – April 13, 2012: Athletes from 67 Member Federations are among the preliminary entries for the IAAF World Race Walking Cup, Saransk, Russia, 12-13 May.

With one month to go before the competition commences, the two-day event in Saransk is already on course to surpass the previous record of 58 countries that participated in the 2006 World Race Walking Cup in La Corun~a, Spain.

Mézidon-Canon, France (57) in 1999, Naumburg, Germany (54) in 2004, Cheboksary, Russia (53) in 2008 and Turin, Italy (51) in 2002 also witnessed more than 50 countries fielding teams.

In terms of participating athletes, the record stands are 430 – 276 men and 154 women – from Cheboksary four years ago. That record could be broken as well with 493 athletes (307 men and 186 women) on the preliminary entry lists.
