Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico complete 12-nation field for WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup 2018

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, March 27, 2018: All 12 nations have now confirmed for the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup® 2018, which will be staged at the USSSA Space Coast Complex from 22-31 August, in Viera (FL), USA (WBSC Womens Baseball World Cup 2018).

The Women’s National Baseball Team of the Dominican Republic won the Pan Am Women’s Baseball World Cup Qualifier on Sunday to earn the nation’s historic first-ever qualification into the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup, which features the best female baseball players in the world playing for their countries.

Puerto Rico will be returning to the Women’s Baseball World Cup for the first time since 2010, after having claimed 2nd Place in Santo Domingo, which granted the nation the 12th and final spot in the world championship in Viera.

Making their historic debuts of their Women’s National Baseball Teams, Mexico and Argentina finished the Pan Am Qualifier in 3rd and 4th Place, respectively.

Presenting the 12 nations set to compete For the Title of World Champion at the VIII WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup:

• Africa: None
• Americas: No. 2 Canada, No. 3 USA, No. 5 Venezuela, No. 9 Cuba, Nr. Dominican Republic, Nr. Puerto Rico
• Asia: No. 1 Japan, No. 7 Korea, No. 6 Chinese Taipei, No. 10 Hong Kong
• Europe: No. 8 Netherlands
• Oceania: No. 4 Australia

“Congratulations to these twelve qualified nations and their athletes who will compete for the world crown in women’s baseball, and a special welcome to historic first-timer Dominican Republic,” said WBSC President Riccardo Fraccari.

“The last Women’s Baseball World Cup in 2016 was the most successful edition, generating record broadcast reach, engagement, and sponsorship value, and we expect the flagship women’s baseball tournament in Viera will surpass those figures.”

The Women’s Baseball World Cup in 2016, in Gijang, Korea, registered a broadcast reach of approximately 100 million households, with an online viewership of more than 6 million views from 198 countries and territories.

The Women’s National Baseball Team of Japan has won the last five editions (2008, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016) of the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup. —- WBSC
