Lausanne, March 01, 2018: The 2021 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships will take place in Copenhagen. The Executive Committee of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) took the unanimous decision to entrust the Danish Gymnastics Federation with hosting the 50th edition of the flagship event during its meeting in Lausanne on 1 March (50th Artistic Gymnastics World Championships).
These World Championships, the first of the 2021-2014 Olympic cycle leading to the Paris Games, will be held on 18-24 October at the new Royal Arena, a state-of-the-art sporting venue inaugurated in 2017 in the Danish capital.
It is a first for Copenhagen, which has never before staged a World Championships in this major Olympic discipline. But Denmark already hosted the 2006 edition in the city of Aarhus.
“As Hans Christian Andersen has inspired the imagination of thousands of children around the world with his famous tales that give food for thought, I hope that these World Championships will inspire the young generation by showing the values of sport,” said FIG President Morinari Watanabe.
“It’s a great achievement to be awarded the 50th Artistic Gymnastics World Championships. Not just for the Federation, but for Danish Gymnastics as a whole,” underlined Anders Jacobsen, President of the Danish Gymnastics Federation.
“An event of this format fits very well into the course and development we have for Gymnastics in Denmark. I’m sure many of our nearly 200,000 members – and the rest of Denmark – will have a Gymnastics experience for life when we host the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in 2021 together with Sport Event Denmark and the city of Copenhagen.”
Before this 50th edition, the next Worlds will take place in Doha (QAT) in 2018, from 25 October to 3 November, and in Stuttgart (GER) in 2019 (4-13 October). —- FIG
