FITA World Archery News of November 2011: FITA World Archery News Box, Development Department, KIM Soo-Nyung (KOR) has started internship project with the World Archery Development Department since Nov 01, 2011.

This project could last up to two years and is supported by the Nest Foundation (Korea Foundation for the Next Generation Sports Talents) She will act as a Development Coordinator, collaborating with Mrs Deqa NIAMKEY and the Development and Education Director Pascal COLMAIRE.

She has already started to look after the equipment assistance programme from World Archery. After some training from World Archery she will run some projects in Asia on behalf of World Archery.

Working as a Media Director at Ulsan 2009 World Championships KIM Soo-Nyung was a member of the South Korean Olympic archery team in 1988, 1992, and 2000.

She has earned a total of four gold medals, including the individual gold medal in 1988. She also won two consecutive individual and team World Championships in 1989 and 1991. After the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, in which she won a silver medal, she retired to take care of her family.

She resumed training in 1999 in the leadup to the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games in which she won the individual bronze medal and her third team gold medal. She is the most decorated Olympian in Korean history. In 2011, KIM was declared the Female Archer of the 20th Century by the World Archery Federation. After an incredible career as an archer, she has declared she wants “to strive to serve archery the best I can”. She is a tremendous example of dedication to our sport.

Asian Games 2014:

World Archery has been informed by the 2014 Incheon Asian Games Organizing Committee (IAGOC) that a compound event will be included in the competition programme together with recurve. The next Asian Games will be held from 19 September to 4 October 2014 in Incheon, Korea. The archery competition will be conducted in the form of a Qualification Round followed by an Olympic Round for Recurve and the Compound Match Round for Compound. For the first time compound will be included in the competition programme.

Therefore, there will be eight archery events altogether in the Incheon Asian Games including recurve men and women individual and team as well as compound men and individual and team. The official website of the competition is www.incheon2014ag.org.

World Archery 3D Championships 2015:

World Archery has received bid interest from the French Archery Federation regarding the 2015 World Archery 3D Championships. Marrakesh International Indoor:

Morocco hosted the 2nd International Indoor Archery Tournament in Marrakesh on 18-20 November 2011 under the theme of “Arrows of Peace”. The hosts were very pleased by the success of this three-day event. It was truly a unique way to start the world indoor archery season.

“The event has been enriched by participants from Africa, Asia and Europe represented by seven countries (Morocco, Algeria, Belgium, France, Iraq, Netherland and Switzerland) including top level archers like Thomas AUBERT (FRA), Sarah PRIEELS (BEL), Michael CAUWE (BEL), Christophe DOUSSOT (FRA) and Pascale LEBECQUE (FRA), plus participation of the two professional photographers Dean ALBERGA (NED) and Jean-Denis GITTON (FRA)”, said Meriam EL MAHIRI, President of Association Club Arc de Marrakech De Tir à l’Arc—the event organiser.

Many archers who joined last year’s competition also participated this year and are looking forward to the next tournament in Marrakesh in 2012. After three days of competition, the following winners were determined in exciting gold medal matches: Thomas AUBERT and Ellen LEBECQUE from France in the recurve division and Michael CAUWE and Sarah PRIEELS from Belgium in the compound division. What makes this competition unique is not only the very warm welcoming, hospitality and professional organisation, but also the cultural programme organised for all participants.

After a sightseeing tour on Friday, the archers discovered the wonderful and magnificent city of Marrakesh, the “Pearl of the South”, in horse-drawn carriages on Saturday, culminating in a big colourful closing party in a typical Morrocan restaurant including many traditional music and horse riding shows on Sunday. “With 51 participants from seven different nations, the Organising Committee has come a big step closer to its goal of giving this tournament a really international atmosphere”, added Meriam EL MAHIRI. Mongolian Archery:

Olympic Solidarity (OS) awarded two scholarships for Mongolian archers for their London 2012 Olympic preparation. Also in 2009 a coaches’ scholarship was given to the Mongolian head coach Badamkhatan TSOGT. The World Archery Development Department was contacted by the Mongolian National Olympic Committee (NOC) to inform them of the qualification of two archers for the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games.

Mongolia’s last qualification for the Olympic Games was in 1996 for Atlanta. “This is a tremendous success for Mongolia Archery”, said Otgontsagaan JUDGER, Secretary General of Mongolian NOC. The team is training at the moment in Erdenet which is about 350km from the capital city, Ulaanbaatar. Erdenet is very well known for its mining industry which is also the main sponsor of the Mongolian Archery Association.

Badam TSOGT’s (head coach) programme is mainly based on general conditioning and specific training, as well as some technical shots, development and daily training on the field. TSOGT was awarded “BEST COACH” in 2008 by the President of Mongolia. The first gold medal in Mongolian sports history was in archery. Doljin DEMBEREL won a gold medal at the World Championships in 1971 in Cardiff, United Kingdom.

World Archery (still FITA at that time) awarded gold medals to the highest score shot at each distance (72 arrows) of a Double FITA Round. DEMBEREL scored 641 points at 30 metres, which was the highest score at the distance, and thus she won a gold medal. World Archery would like to express its gratitude to the OS and Mongolia NOC for their tremendous support in the development of our sport.

Equipment Assistance Programme:

World Archery along with Development partners can assist some Member Associations (MAs) to obtain archery equipment at favourable conditions in the frame of assisting those MAs in putting in place their development strategic plan. MAs who wish to benefit of this assistance are required in the first place to send their strategic development plan to World Archery: pcolmaire@archery.org.

The MAs that submit such a plan will then be added to the World Archery world list of eligible countries to request the archery equipment assistance programme. You may consult this list at www.worldarchery.org, section Development > Start Archery.

The MAs that require assistance to prepare their development strategic plan can find some examples from other MAs at the bottom of the same World Archery web page mentioned above. This assistance programme will vary based on the project interest and consistency to put in place the strategic development plan but also on what the World Archery development partners can offer.

European Coaching Training Programme:

The second leg of the European coaching training programme in archery will take place from 22-26 April 2012 in Compiègne, France. The programme began with a course from 28 February to 5 March 2011 with the participation of 14 candidates: one from AUT, ROU, HUN, ISR, FRA, CYP and two from EST, CRO, IRL and GRE.

World Archery with the assistance of EMAU will conduct this programme thanks to the financial assistance from Olympic Solidarity and the European Olympic Committee. André KORLAAR (NED) and Pascal COLMAIRE (World Archery) will conduct this project.

The participants from the first edition had to submit a report on the preparation of a level 1 archery training programme to the experts. They will also have to be able to conduct this course based on the feedback they received from the experts. Additionally an evaluation report of the course conductor will have to be given by the candidates.
