FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 high-ranking LOC officials confirmed, FIBA to open three offices in China

Beijing, June 14, 2016: A milestone event on the road to the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 took place on Tuesday as the Establishment Ceremony of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the next edition of FIBA’s flagship competition was revealed in Beijing’s Wukesong Stadium.

Mr. Gao Zhidan, Vice Minister of China’s General Administration of Sports (CGAS), Mr. Zhang Jiandong, Vice Mayor of Beijing, and Mr. Patrick Baumann, FIBA Secretary General and International Olympic Committee (IOC) Member, were all on hand for the special occasion in China’s capital city.

They were joined by senior officials from the eight host cities – Beijing, Nanjing, Shanghai, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Foshan and Dongguan – that will welcome a record 32 teams from 31 August-15 September 2019. All of the participating teams at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 will have achieved qualification via FIBA’s new competition system, which comes into effect in November 2017.

Minister Liu Peng of CGAS and Mayor Wang Anshun of Beijing were named Directors General of the LOC, which will operate from offices next to the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics Organizing Committee.

FIBA also used this event – which brought together leading Chinese governmental figures and media outlets – to announce it is opening offices in Beijing, Guangzhou and Nanjing. This move will serve to assist in the preparation for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019. Through these offices, FIBA’s presence in China will be assured beyond the tournament as part of the legacy plan.
