California, Nov 6, 2015: The value of the International Surfing Association (ISA) Scholarship Programme was underlined at the 2015 VISSLA ISA World Junior Surfing Championship in Oceanside, California in October, with 13 scholarship recipients taking part in the record breaking event.
Hawaii’s Summer Macedo, a 2013 ISA Scholarship winner, was the stand-out performer amongst the scholarship recipients winning the Gold Medal in the Girls U-16 Division – reaffirming herself as one of the best junior surfers in the world. 2015 ISA Scholarship Programme.

The ISA Scholarship Programme offers financial aid to surfers who are under 18 to further their education, pay for travel to surf contests, pay for contest fees and upgrade their surfing equipment. Athletes are considered based on their dedication to Surfing as well as their academic performance. The 2015 ISA Scholarship Programme is currently open to applicants with the deadline for submission set for 31 December 2015.
The ISA Individual Scholarship was established in 2007 and has awarded more than USD $228,500 in scholarships to further the education and surfing careers of 267 surfers. Scholarship winners have gone on to compete at national and international Surfing competitions with the help of the financial aid.
One of the standout scholarship performers at the ISA World Championship included South African Ntando Msibi, who placed 17th in the Boys U-18 Division. Msibi put his scholarship award towards a new surfboard and travel costs for national surfing competitions, helping him to qualify for the South Africa Junior Team for the second consecutive year.
Another top performer included 13-year-old Daniella Rosas of Peru who placed 13th in this year’s competition. Receiving an ISA Scholarship in 2014, she used her funding for English classes, contest entry fees and surfing equipment, helping her become one of the top junior surfers in South America.
ISA President, Fernando Aguerre, said:
“The ISA is proud to continue to award scholarships to young surfers around the globe, giving them a unique opportunity that they may not otherwise have to maximise their Surfing potential but also to help them excel academically. It is truly incredible to see how these ISA scholarship winners have improved their skills and risen to be the top junior surfers in their nations. They are showing tremendous dedication to their sport and they are improving all of the time – hopefully we will see some of them competing on the waves at Tokyo 2020.”
