ISSF World Cup in Shotgun

Today’s Trap Men Gold medal match won by Spain’s Alberto Fernandez closed the 2014 ISSF World Cup in Shotgun events held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, from the 16 through the 25 of May.

After passing through the semi-final with a perfect score of 15 out of 15 hits, Fernandez faced Erik Varga of Slovakia in the Gold medal match, witch ended up in a tied as both the finalist score 13 hits. In the following shoot-off for Gold, Fernandez prevailed by 4 to 3 hits, securing his second ISSF World Cup Gold medal in career.

Today’s Bronze medal went to Kuwait’s Fehaid Aldeehani, the Olympic Bronze medallist of London 2012 and Sydney 2000. The 48-year old shooter scored 14 targets in the semi-final, and then outdid Italy’s Mauro De Filippi in the Bronze medal match by 14 to 11 hits.

More than 300 athletes coming from over 45 countries competed in the five Olympic events of Shotgun shooting there during the third leg of this year’s ISSF World Cup Series, which kicked off last March in Fort Benning (USA) and then continued in Tucson (USA), in April.

Italy finished atop of the medal standings of Almaty’s world cup stage with a total of three medals, including two Gold (won by Filippelli at the Skeet Men medal matcH and by Di Spigno at the Double Trap match), and one Silver medal (Chiara Cainero, Skeet Women).
Slovakia and USA followed in second place, with one Gold and one Silver medal each.

Marcus Svensson (Sweden) equalled the current Skeet Men World Record of 124 hits, winning a Land Rover Discovery offered by the competition’s local sponsors.

The ISSF World Cup Series will now continue in Munich, Germany, where the next combined world cup stage in Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun events will take place at the 1972 Olympic Shooting Range from the 4 to the 13 of June. —- ISSF/Photo by Marco Dalla Dea
