World Cup Canada 2014 match schedule unveiled

Montreal – Canada: The official match schedule for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014 was unveiled today at the City Hall of Montreal just less than one year before the start of the competition.

The opening match with hosts Canada will take place on 5 August 2014 at the National Soccer Stadium in Toronto. The final two matches, both the match for third place and the final, will take place in the famous Olympic Stadium of Montreal on 24 August. The three-week competition will feature 16 teams and 32 matches from the opener through to the final.

All four Official Host Cities – Edmonton, Toronto, Montreal and Moncton – will host six matches in the group phase. Canada, as hosts seeded A1, will play at least two group matches in Toronto and one group match in Montreal.

“Canada is honoured to welcome the best young female soccer players from around the world next summer,” said Canadian Minister of State (Sport) Bal Gosal. “Our government is pleased to support this major international event that will showcase our cultural diversity and bring many economic benefits. We invite Canadians to join in as the excitement for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014 starts to build across our nation in the coming months.”

“The announcement of the match schedule is an important moment on the road to the final tournament as the Host Cities now know the number of games they will host. And the fans can already save the dates and in November will be able to finally buy their tickets for the matches”, commented Tatjana Haenni, FIFA’s Deputy Director of Competitions for Women’s Football.

“Our four Official Host Cities will do a wonderful job hosting the best young footballers in this important youth competition,” said Victor Montagliani, Chairman of the National Organizing Committee for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014. “These 32 matches provide an important step on the development ladder to the national “A” teams and future FIFA Women’s World Cups.”

Qualifiers for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014 are already underway. Canada 2014 will see the participation of three teams from the AFC (Asia), two teams from CAF (Africa), three teams from CONCACAF (North and Central America and the Caribbean) in addition to the Canadian hosts, two teams from CONMEBOL (South America), four teams from UEFA (Europe) and one team from the OFC (Oceania).
