ICC MEDIA RELEASE, Dubai, 9 October 2011: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) off-spinner Vikrant Shetty has been reported with a suspected illegal bowling action during his side’s four-day ICC Intercontinental Cup 2011-2013 match against Afghanistan which ended in a draw on Saturday at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
The 27-year-old, who had figures of 5-1-28-0 and 6-6-0-0, was reported after the end of the match by on-field umpires Ahsan Raza of the Emirates International Panel of ICC Umpires and Buddhi Pradhan of the ICC Associates and Affiliates Umpires’ Panel, along with third umpire Iftikhar Ali of the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB). The umpires’ report has cited concern over Shetty’s bowling action with the possibility of it being illegal.
Where a bowler is reported by the umpires due to a suspected illegal action in an ICC development tournament match, the policy requires the relevant member board – in this case the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) – to initiate an assessment. In the meantime, the player is still free to take part in international cricket, including this week’s 50-over League matches against Afghanistan on Monday and Wednesday.
The ECB will now have 21 days to make arrangements for the assessment of Shetty’s bowling action. As soon as the assessment has been completed, the ECB must formally report back to the ICC as to what the results of the tests were and what action has been taken.
