Kazan, July 10, 2013: The fourth day of competition juste came to an end in Kazan on the occasion of the 27th Summer Universiade. It concluded the individual competition session. Tomorrow for the last day of judo, teams will be on the tatami. But before that, the light weight categories and the open categories competed today for the title.
At the end of the four first days, Korea counts four gold medal, Japan three, Russia, Brazil and the Czech Republic sharing two gold medals each, when France, Cuba and Hungary have one gold. All together 19 countries have stepped stepped on the podium in Kazan, and 33 countries have had athletes in the top five, among the 63 delegations that participated in the individual tournament.
Women’s -48kg: The KUZNETCOVA Tornedo Wins the Title
The start of the final seemed to give an advantage to the French, Scarlett GABRIELLI (FRA), who dominated the Russian Alesia KUZNETCOVA (RUS), but in front of her home crowed, KUZNETCOVA suddenly found a good opportunity to conclude on the ground with an armlock after a long and effective ground work session. First bronze went to Maryna CHERNIAK (UKR), who easily defeated Ebru SAHIN (TUR) with a counter attack on the edge of the competition area. The second bronze medal went to the Cuban, Dayaris Rosa MESTRE ALVARES, who won by a penalty against Ewa KONIECZNY (POL) after both fighters scored a yuko during the fight.

Women’s Open: Revenge for the Olympic Champion, Idalys ORTIZ
For the second time during the Universiade, Rochele NUNES (BRA) and Idalys ORTIZ BOCOURT (CUB) met in the final. But this remake of the +78kg category final didn’t have the same conclusion. The match turned into the advantage of the Olympic Champion, who won by penalties, NUNES being penalized for passivity.
The first bronze medal went to Yelyzaveta KALANINA (UKR) who defeated Clarissa Gabriele TAUBE (GER) with two yuko. The second bronze medal was won by INOUE Manami (JPN). Waiting for the right opportunity to launch her powerful o-soto-gari, the Japanese was first penalized for passivity, but her only-attack was enough for a superb ippon.

Men’s -60kg: Japan Overcomes Russian Power
Being Olympic Champion is not a guaranty to win the Universiade title, especially not in 2013. It happened to Ortiz Idalys (CUB) during the first day of competition here in Kazan in the women’s +78kg weight category. It happened again to Arsen GALSTYAN (RUS), Olympic Champion in London, who lost his final against the hyperactive KIDO Shinji (JPN), who scored ippon a few seconds before the end of the fight with a superb ko-uchi-gari.
The first bronze medal was won by Pavel PETRIKOV (CZE) against Michael ITEN (SUI) with a single shido. But the score doesn’t reflect the intensity of the match, where both fighters went to the limit of their forces. The second bronze medal fight was even more dynamic, DASHDAVAA Amartuvshin (MGL) and KIM Won Jin (KOR) attacking non-stop but also committing several faults that were sanctioned by shido. When DASHDAVAA finally scored waza-ari with a counter-attack, he thought that the victory belonged to him, but Kim continued to attack and attack again and in the last 20 seconds, the Mongolian was penalized for the fourth time and thus was disqualified.

Men’s Open: Second Gold Medal for KRPALEK
The Czech fighter, Lukas KRPALEK, is with no doubt in good shape. After having won the title in his weight category (-100kg), two days ago, he entered the open competition without any complex and won again today in Kazan. In the preliminary rounds, he successively defeated Jean Sebastien BONVOISIN (FRA), Maciej SARNACKI (POL) and gave no chance to KIM Sung Min (KOR) in the semi-final, before winning against the Japanese MOMOSE Masaru, who despite a waza-ari scored during the first half of the final, was not active enough and got incomprehensibly penalized four times for passivity. It does not happen often that the same fighter wins two titles during the same competition. It happens even less than a -100kg wins the Open category in front of all the other heavy weight fighters of the tournament.
The first bronze medal was won by David SILVA (BRA) against Sherali JURAEV (UZB) with a rapid Sasae-tsuri-komi-ashi for ippon, the Uzbek being incapable of taking advantage of his smaller size to impose a higher rhythm. In the second bronze medal fight, despite his efforts to put out of balance the Korean Kim Sung Min, Anton RUDNYK (UKR) was quickly sent to the ground with a counter attack for ippon.
