SJAS AGBM approved amendments in constitution and code of conduct

Karachi – Pakistan, April 24, 2013: The 2nd Annual General Body meeting of Sports Journalists Association Sindh (SJAS) was held on Saturday, April 20 2013 at 10PM at Karachi Press Club (KPC), it started with recitation from the holy Quran by Khurram Mahmood and ended with dua for progress & welfare of SJAS and its members.

AGB has approved future plans including welfare programmes for the members. The meeting attended nearly 50 members reaffirmed wholehearted support and full confidence over the leadership of President Rashid Ali Siddiqui and Secretary General Ubaid ur Rehman Awan. It also passed many amendments in the constitution and declared that SJAS is a registered body by Government of Sindh. Its constitution declares that it is an autonomous and independent body and other sports/writers association or federation or any other body cannot interfere into its internal matters. If a dispute arises within SJAS or with other association/federation, its executive committee has power to tackle it and if feels can refer it to extra general body. The amended constitution replaced managing committee by Executive Committee.

The meeting chaired by President SJAS, Rashid Ali Siddiqui also approved a code of conduct for members and house enforced it on each and every member with immediate effect. The house gave authority to Executive Committee to replace office-bearers who are non-functional or resigned by new officials to streamline the working the association. Abdul Ghaffar expressed his inability to continue as member Executive Committee.

The house discussed in detail the dispute of SJAS with Pakistan Sports Writers Federation (PSWF) and considered various options. The house appreciated those members, who snubbed the invitation, sent by Amjad Aziz Malik, Secretary, PSWF individually and did not go to Peshawar while some members expressed their anger for those who attended the Congress in Peshawar and damaged the interest of SJAS. The house was divided over reconciliation or confrontation with PSWF. Tariq Aslam vice president, Mehmood Riaz and Muhammad Asghar stressed on their arguments for reconciliation. However, majority gave its verdict in favor of reconciliation. Therefore, a three-member committee constituted by managing committee last month, has been given the task to resolve the matter. The committee headed by Syed Nasar Iqbal, Senior Vice President, include Tariq Aslam, Vice President and Muhammad Asghar Azeem, member EC. However, Shoaib Ahmed, founding member, raised strong objection on the reconciliatory move. The house on the recommendation of President gave amnesty to those who attended the Peshawar Congress and warned that if a member found in any such practice or breach of code of conduct in future he/she will face consequences.

Secretary General, SJAS Ubaid-ur-Rehman Awan presented activities report of 2012-13 with the accounts statement of income and expenditure. He informed the house that SJAS has been registered by Government of Sindh after a lengthy process. The house appreciated his untiring efforts and expressed full confidence in his abilities as secretary. He told the house the SJAS hosted PSWF Congress successfully from June 2-4, 2012, launched its first ever souvenir, honoured sports dignitaries including former Indian wicketkeeper Mujtaba Hussain Kirmani, POA President Lt-Gen(retd) Syed Arif Hassan, PHF Secretary Olympian Asif Bajwa, President Pakistan Boxing Federation Doda Khan Bhutto and world snooker champion Muhammad Asif besides holding cricket, football and hockey matches for members and organizing a workshop on world sports journalism day on July 2, 2012. He informed the house the SJAS patron Dr Farhan Essa has offered a minimum 30 percent concession of lab charges for the SJAS members.

Editor Sports Dawn, Mr Rishad Mehmood attended the meeting as observe and guest of honour. He was very much impressed with working the SJAS. He was introduced with members. He also briefly addressed the house and said, “I’m pleased to see sports journalists of different organizations had assembled on a common platform and they are sincere with their cause and there is no vested interest in your association.” President SJAS gave him SJAS souvenir and copy of activities report. Later, he informed that he has decided to become a member. Senior member Anisuddin Khan also welcomed him and lauded the efforts made by members’ especially young journalists who formed the body as in the past some journalists were failed to do so. On the occasion, Rashid Ali Siddiqui informed the house that he was elected democratically as President SJAS and was also elected as President PSWF. He strongly believed in the norms of democracy and would not seek re-election for the post of president when this term expired.

The house approved the minutes of last AGM, held on February 11, 2012 at Hockey Club of Pakistan.

The house also offered fateha for the late Dr Muhammad Ali Shah, Patron-in-chief, Sain Razaullah Khan, father of Mohsin Raza (Abb Takk tv), mother of Zubair Nazeer (Daily Express) and father of Syed Intikhab Ali (The News).
