Germany, April 16, 2013: The Paralympic Movement, led by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), has today expressed its shock and sadness at the tragic events which occurred at yesterday’s Boston marathon.
Sir Philip Craven, IPC President said: “On behalf of the Paralympic Movement I’d like to offer my deepest condolences and sympathies to the families and friends of those who tragically lost loved ones in this terrible incident. Our thoughts are also with those in hospital recovering from their injuries.
“This despicable cowardly act has left us all appalled, shocked and deeply saddened.
“Whether attending a marathon as an athlete, fun runner or a spectator you expect an enjoyable and memorable experience and to return home safe and sound.
“The last thing you expect is for an event that showcases to the world the power and spirit of the human race, and one which raises millions each year for good causes, to be caught up in such a vile and mindless incident.
“For all marathon racers, Boston is one of the highlights of the year. It was the first major marathon to introduce wheelchair racing in 1975 and athletes from all over the world love competing there – the quality of the field each year underlines this.
“Athletes openly speak about the sensational support they receive each year not just from the city’s great people but also from sponsors, media, staff and the thousands of volunteers.
“We send our full support to the great people of Boston and hope those behind this pathetic and sickening act of violence are brought to justice quickly.” —- IPC
